Thought I'd post my latest acquisitions--quite a mixed bag. I picked these up in a stamp auction, of all things. It was a pretty scattered collection that included about 30 notgelds, a few other German and French low value notes, and these. The ones that caught my eye were the Confederates--these two I'm certain are legit. There were also several Japanese pre-war notes, including this high denom 1000 yen, and even a couple MPCs, one of which was this scruffy $5. So I ended up spending about $100 for everything. What do you think -- good deal or not so much?
I'm out of town, but heading home and tonight/tomorrow morning I'll look up your yen in the JNDA catalog. Face value is about $12.50, but even in that condition the age indicates a probable higher value. MPC is not my bag, but I'm pretty sure you have a pretty early series there. Overall - nice catch.
And this is why you should always buy coins from stamp collectors! I had no idea the MPC was that pricey. I was most interested in the $500 Confederate. Any estimate on that one?
I see a few pinholes, a few rounded corners, folds, and soiling, which would bring it to the Fine level. As for price, I don't have a confederate price guide anymore. Sorry!
Even with those creases and bruised corners, that CSA $500 note looks to be in F/VF condition. It's a note that is always in demand. I'm thinking it has to be worth somewhere between $350-$400.
Wow really?!? I'd better check the rest of this hoard closely. Who knows what might be amongst the notgeld!
Your 1950 Bank of Japan note is #11-71 in the Japanese Numismatic Dealers Assn. catalog, listed at the equivalent of $40-50 or so in that condition. The portrait is of Prince Shotoku, a 7th Century leader who was prominent in the introduction of Buddhism and a form of Chinese-style civil service to Japan.
