It's an American Silver Eagle that has been altered. The silver eagle is a bullion coin issued by the US Mint since 1986 (I think).
Looks like it was a 1986 . Look at the reverse, it says "One Dollar".

Looks like a well worn ASE. These do not circulate anywhere I know of, perhaps someone had it as a pocket piece for a number of years. ;)

i agree it is a SAE becuase the reverse of the coin the walkers had a completely different reverse and the weight is listed @ 12.5 grams.

    its a fake :(

I agree. The seller proves his ignorance by giving the weight as 8/10 oz., even though the reverse clearly states "1 oz. Fine Silver". Apparently he doesn't know the difference between avoirdupois and troy weights :(, or that precious metals are measured in troy ounces. One oz. av. is approximately .8 troy ounce.

I also agree that it is really a 1986 with the center line of the eight tooled out.

Your right about the tooled out part. Just for fun, I checked his one other auction for a shield nickel (or in his case, "nickle"). A 1882 VG going to someone for 18.00 currently.

Is this the kind of thing that should be reported to eBay?

He called ot a 1906 Should of done his research before listing. I almost bid figured if I got it cheap egnough it would be worth the silver, but I though it may not even be real.

Two things to remember when buying coins:

    1. If the price is too good to be true, do not buy. There is no Santa Claus in numismatics.

    2. Pay attention. Do your due diligence. If in doubt, pass, there will always be another coin coming along.

He states, "...not sure if its real...cheap because I don't know anything about it..."

Clearly he not not trying to decieve anyone, he just does not know what it is.

Don't believe that he does not know anything about coins.

I see and hear about too many Ebay dealers who sell coins each and every day and claim they know nothing about coins.

Just how difficult is it to figure out what a Silver Eagle is?

For anyone who believes this seller, PM me about some nice ocean front property I have in Arizona.

Well, it sold for $5.35 +$2 S&H, so he is getting barely above melt, including the S&H Charge.

For someone that knows little about coins, he sure sells alot of them.

    Amazing isn't it?

This seems to be an effective way to sell coins with no repercussions? They can always claim ignorance. I love it when they say grade by the photos. We have all shown here on the forum just how hard that is.

Goes back to knowing your coins and your dealer.

I guess I post this in defense of all of us who are ignorant of coins and their values....so....
Maybe he is like me....decided to dig into those cookie tins and sell those coins that were just sitting around gathering dust....even though he knows little about the coins themselves.

I was told by a friend that I should sell my coins on ebay also....there seems to be alot of people who know what these coins are and their value....but as a seller I feel a little intimidated by someone who knows all of this information. I have no idea what price to set on coins that I know little about. I have tried to educate myself on US coins and their values....but all I have to go on are a couple of books and the internet. And I haven't even tackled the foreign coins yet!!!

I'm about as lost on ebay as I am with these coins. There seem to be a tremendous number of people selling coins.....I think I might take my chances with a company that will appraise and buy the whole lot, including the foreign. Seems to be the safest and least amount of trouble for a novice at coin trading.
Thanks for all the help.....you guys have helped me to see that I'm in way over my head on this one. At least I have sorted all of the US coins to make it easier for someone to evaluate their value.

pjd, I know that I am little biased in my opinions about regular dealers and Ebay. I however agree with you. Dealers while they may not pay as much as you can get at auction, do make the process a little easier. If you choose to sell to a dealer, you still need to do a little research about that dealer. There are some that will attempt to buy your holdings for a song. Feel free to post the dates and denominations here on CoinTalk and we will all help you get started.
