If anyone could help me with this liberty eagle that was left to me by my grandfather. I only really have money to collect silver coins so grading gold coins seems a bit tougher. And if the pics arent great please be patient i am new to the community. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I would send it off immediately to PCGS. I'm certainly no expert in Gold, and for what I know, it could be a fake, but given the potential value I would have it looked at.
To me, this coin looks heavily cleaned and thus is ungradable. But, I would say it has EF details. As for authenticity, I'm not an expert with these so I can't make a judgement on that. I can tell you that it would not slab with a grade. Also, despite the fact that it's a somewhat rare date...I don't know if it is worth more than melt because of it's condition but I could be mistaken on that too.
quoting from the ANa gradeing guide, au-55 three quarters of mint luster present, trace of wear on coronet and above eye, trace of wear visible on eagles wing tips.
There are a lot of scratches all over the coin which does not look like wear. Those scratches are consistent with hard scrubbing on the surface of the coin with some kind of abrasive material...like a cloth.
Aww man it was probably me when i was a kid he used to let us hold it...probably did the old shirt rub. Well that kinda stinks I thought it was worth a bunch. Well either way I wouldnt sell it for a million. Anyway thanks for the info.muh appreciated.
IMHO, the coin in this thread is much more severely cleaned. If he wants to submit it to PCGS...he can. It will almost certainly come back graded "Genuine" assuming it is authentic. I just don't think it will grade. But, being that it is a priceless family heirloom...I see nothing wrong with that. I sent my 1854 Type 2 $1 gold piece to PCGS knowing it would come back as a genuine. It was given to me by my deceased grandmother and I wanted it in a slab. It was worth it to me even though it probably wasn't economically.
yes exactly how i feelin order to preserve what i have now, cleaned Or not, i may have it slabbed. I of course would want it to be as valuable As possible in dollars but like you have said the intrinsic value Out weighs the price of of slabbing. It was passed to my grandfather by Zhis parents and now to me. Hopefully my childrens chldren will Enjoy it as i do (except with a sonically sealed case for protection)lol
That's what I did. I wanted the 2 gold pieces she left me to be authenticated and to be preserved. So, I had them both slabbed. I knew one was going to grade and the other wouldn't before hand. I would have a dealer look at the coin. In hand, you can make a better determination about the coin then you can in a photo. Here are the 2 pieces my grandma left me
The scratches look like 'chicken scratches' that occur during circulation rather than from cleaning. Rubbing with a cloth will usually cause parallel hairlines or scratches. The scratches on your coin are in random directions rather than parallel.
You could be right...they just look so pronounced to me. I still believe its the remnants of a cleaning. That said, the OP has made it clear that this coin is worth far more to him than it is to any other collector and he wants to have it slabbed for that reason. I say go for it. The OP knows it might come back with a "Genuine" label and if he is OK with that...then give it a shot. Who knows, maybe I am wrong and it will come back graded.
ok so cleaned or not does anyone have a good idea what grade this could fall under?besides the one person who answered xf?or does everyone agree with that?
im going to say AU - damaged. by what i dont know. rubbing it with your shirt couldnt do that. im actually thinking it might of been dug out of the ground.
honestly you could be right about digging it up i really dont have much story to it. It did come with an old small cardboard box meant to hold that coin or one of its size. i know this for sure my grandfather was born in 1917 and my father said his parents had originally left it to him after they passed. So im thinking they may have found it somewhere or just got it out of circulation and held on to it.....I wish i knew. Any idea on value?
sending it out this week....ill keep everyone informed on the label given by pcgs... hopefully it will read genuine mostly but a grade would be great but im not getting hopes up,
If you send it in for grading, don't send it to PCGS-- send it to either NGC or ANACS-- that way, if it is cleaned, you'll get at least a "details" grade, rather than just a generic "genuine" grade
