As mentioned in another thread, 300 ikes landed in my lap today. I went through them and there were some beautiful keepers. 80 of these guys were nabbed out of circulation very quickly. Bunches of luster and what not. Sorry about the pics, I used my camera phone.

Anyway, this first is a type 2 correct? I scanned the coin for the earth pic. The rest are just an idea of what the 80 ones I am keeping look like.

    Type 2?

    Picture 5 is a 1972 type 3

Did you search the 1971 D's for FEV's?

Congrats on the 72 type 2. I found one a couple years ago when I picked up $150 in Ikes at a local bank. I heard there were only 100k made, but for so many to be found in circulation I wonder if there were more or if lots of Ikes are being put back into circulation. Mine was about the same condition as yours and I sold it for about $50 so that's a nice pickup for you.

I didn't realize 1972 type 3's are worth a little more than others. There are a bunch of those. Guess I have to go through them again and take them out. ugh.

Two different Type 2 varieties have been identified which brings the mintage closer to 225,000 to 250,000 coins.

These are definitely scarce and prices are usually dictated by the perceived historical rarity but if one looks long enough, they are available. Sometimes at face or close to face value.

1972 was an interesting year for the Philadelphia Mint in that they seemed incapable of producing a good high quality strike. As such, finding ANY of the 1972 Philly IKE's in MS65 an be a windfall while finding an MS66 can pay for a years worth of college education with prices ranging from a low of $6,500 (Type 3) to a high of $16,500 (Type 2).

I expect that as the year trudge on, those prices can only go up.

Congrats to the OP for his find!

Gbroke, I saw your original post in the roll-hunting section and was hoping you would find a Type-2. Congrats! It looks to be in great shape.

Unfortunately I cannot invest $300 into coins this week, so I will be getting rid of 220 of them. If anyone wants them at face, plus shipping, pm me. 90% of the 220 are AU +. You will not be disappointed.
