i've been given some very nice silver coins from the US and one is a 1945 merc dime with a strange mintmark, it looks like a "W" the others are an almost uncirculated 1936 quarter, a 1951 quarter, 1961 nickel and a 1957 nickel both with denver mint marks. a i don't own a red book and can't really be bothered to wade through the krause, anyone any ideas about these coins?
As for the Mercury dime, the W is not the mintmark. The mintmark is on the back to the bottom left of the torch. The quarters are probably worth 8-10 dollars depending on grade and the nickels are worth 5 cents a piece unless they are in mint state.
If you look closely, the "W" you see on the obverse is actually an "AW" which are the initials of the designer, Adolph Weinman. Chris
