Do any of you know if there are Chinese fakes of the State Quarter Proofs, especially the DCAM 70's? They seem to be selling for half of PCGS price on ebay.
Since more than 99% of modern proofs come from the mint as DCAM MS69-70, there isn't much of a premium on these above their bullion content. Not to mention it would cost more for a counterfeiter to manufacture a fake proof state quarter than a real one would go for on the market. Guy
Big sellers can get really good bulk pricing on slabs. I often score modern stuff in 69 for 5-15 bucks, and maybe 15-30 for 70's... Imagine if the seller only paid 5-10 bucks to slab, and he or she sales a hundred plus a day... I could swear many sellers take a lose on quarters, but more than makes it up on slabbed pennies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've seen 2010 MS-70 go for over $300 bucks!!! <- THAT SHOULD BE THE REAL QUESTION! Whats up with that?
That never stopped the Chinese before . LOL I can see it now , Big chinese mill arrested for bogus state quarters . LOL Maybe the gov. would do something if they faked circulating coinage .
Maybe it's just me, but I think if a modern proof came in as a DCAM MS69/70, that would be worth a whole lot of money!
I wish they were! If the chinese start making fake state quarters this whole chinese counterfeit problem would come to a halt rather quickly. The feds would put the proverbial foot to a** . The reason you see these selling way below price guide is simple, there is no demand. Once all the registry guys pay stupid money for 70's the prices drop like a rock, as they should. 68-69 is the NORM for modern proof, and most folks can't tell the difference between a 69 and a 70 anyway. IMO paying strong bucks for a modern proof in a 70 holder is a huge waste of money. You would be better off putting you $ in junk silver.
Let's not forget, aside from grade rarity, the silver proof SQ's are low mintage and a bargain at close to melt - if you think melt is a bargain at today's price.
