I have recently received a 1924 50 kopeck variety, Y# 89.1 according to the standard catalog of world coins. I was hoping to see old Russian weight units on the edge, again, according to the catalog description. What i saw were new gram units, the kind that should be on Y# 89.2, in other words, only on varieties from years 1925-1927. I checked a Russian catalog (RSFSR/SSSR 1921-2011), here is what it says. Take a look at the variety table on the right: It seems i got number 1 in this table, while i thought i will be getting number 3, with actual old weight units. According to this table, the coin i got is relatively rare and supposed to be more valuable. Could anyone acknowledge this? If, according to the world catalog, the price for this coin is $30 USD in XF, should the value for a variety i got be higher? (I got a feeling i saw a very similar thread here, with an answer from one of the Russian coins collectors, but i can not find it.)
Can you tell me what YOUR edge says? Or take photos of it if you don't have a Russian keyboard? Because your explanation is confusing. You got edge type #1, but were expecting 3, but then you're asking if yours is worth more...? Well, if you have edges type 1 or 2, they're worth no more than $15-20 a piece. The other edge types are rarely seen, I haven't seen any auctioned off recently, so I can't even tell you a price, but I'm curious as to what kind of edge you have.
Thanks for your reply, but i figured it out already. I thought that the 1924 type ONLY got 1 edge version, the #3, because I got confused by the US catalog of world coins. Unfortunately, i got the Russian reference book a bit too late and was not aware about the 15 varieties from all the years. Anyhow, what i got is #1, the cheaper one.
No problem, glad you figured it out. It's a shame there's no mintage figures for the other edge types. So far, I have never seen any edges that differ from the common ones. In fact, I recently bought twelve 1924 half roubles, hoping maybe one of the edge types will be mixed in, but it was just all the cheaper varieties with the 2 different mintmarks. It would be interesting to see one of these pop up one day on eBay, for example.
