    Isn't SGS the self slabber?

It's not an error. SGS is a self slabber trying to make an extra buck.

    Knowledge: http://www.coinnews.net/coins/the-american-eagle-silver-coin-history-design-prices-and-mint-figures/

And in 2008, there were W-Proofs, W-Uncirculated coins (Burnished), and No mark -Bullion strikes. 3 different strikes.

If it is a "burnished proof" without the W, then it is legit.

If it is a bullion stike, it never had the W to begin with.

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

In 2008, all US Silver Eagles were minted at West Point. The bullion coins had no mint mark. The proofs had a "W" mint mark. This one is dressed up to look like an error coin. At least they didn't grade it as proof 70. PT Barnum would be proud.

I just sent him a question asking if it has the burnished finish or if it is a regular business strike. What do you think he will say?

He's going to pretend you're an idiot and don't know squat about coins.

The coin to get from 2008 is the 2008 obverse with an old 2007 reverse. 2008 was a transitional year at Westy Point for the ASE, the reverse lettering is different, espesially around the U in United States. One type of U has a tail the other no tail.

the only error here would be in buying that "error"

Yep and looking at the coin posted it is the new type U. So no added value at all. Has anyone ever seen one of thier slabs, that was not a "70?" LOL

    My question to the seller:
    Dear kdc,

Only the Proofs have the W mint mark. Is your coin a proof? It looks more like an uncirculated which shouldn't have the mint mark. Please let me know.

    His response:
    Dear bobbeth87,

    hi
i think your right. it is unc
    thank you

While a bit shady, there is a problem here; the seller never said this coin was an error-the OP said that. All the seller said was that it didn't have the "W" mintmark, and it doesn't.

Well, I finally got an answer to my question, but it seems the seller is attempting to skirt the issue.

    Dear cpm9ball,

    hi
its a regular. we are taking it off line because there is a problem with the holder
    thank you

    Dear kdc,

Your photos are a little blurry and you didn't mention if this SAE has the burnished finish. Does it have a burnished finish or is it a regular business strike? Thanks! Chris

    - cpm9ball

    Bobbeth,

Your statement that only the proofs have the West Point mintmark is incorrect. In 1986, when the Mint issued the 20th Anniversary Set, they also decided to issue for direct sale to the public, for the first time, an uncirculated SAE with the burnished finish and the "W" mintmark. These were also released in 2007 and 2008, but discontinued after that.

That is a genuine bullion strike 2008 ASE which would not have the W mintmark on it. I've sold 4 rolls when silver shot over $30 an ounce this winter, and everyone of the 08s were bullion strikes with no mintmark.

FYI, SGS grades everything MS or PR 70 even when it isn't and certainly PCGS and NGC would not give a MS/PR70 on it.

    They're a junk, basement grader.
