Question about Airtights for Coins...

    I'm looking to get airtites for coins that I have that are 33mm in diameter. Now, I looked at some of the ones sold on eBay and a lot of them come with black foam rings that you can put into the airtight. But how do those foam rings affect the size of the coin that can be held?

    For example, I saw a description for a "Morgan airtight with black ring" < does that mean the airtight will fit a Morgan without a black ring or only WITH the black ring (if the latter, that means the airtight will actually hold a larger coin)...

    Hoes does this work?

    The air-tites with rings are larger than the actual coin, so yes, they would fit a larger coin if you left the ring out, however, a coin that is thicker than the coin the air-tite is meant for may not fit, so thickness is important as well. I see one that MAY fit your coin here: http://www.airtiteholders.com/Categories/category.aspx?CID=1

    Actually, I think you also need to know if the coin you're planning on putting in the airtite has a consistent enough diameter not to rattle around in them. Morgan dollars do, so there's no real reason I can think of to get the airtite with a ring. :)

    I see JP has raised his prices 6 cents per airtite since I last looked at his site.

    The rings are for coins that are close but not quite an exact fit. AirTite can't make a holder for EVERY coin. I've used the ring versions for alot of foreign bullion with no trouble.

    Fifty;
    Since you have foreign bullion, what do you use for the more modern thicker Mexican bullion coins? I have been using $1 2x2's and stapling on all four sides. I would prefer to use an airtite, but they won't close properly.

    If you look at the second link I posted you'll see that they make holders for thicker coins. But it depends on what size coin you are talking about. Click the Model X tab and you'll see what I mean.

    The problem I see is they don't list how thick a coin the holders will accommodate. Mexican one oz. bullion from the mid 1980's and 90's are 4mm thick. The diameter isn't listed under X either, it's 36mm. In 2x2's, I'm afraid they will tarnish much faster; even with a drying agent inside the case they're stored in. Is uncut ring material available where it can be trimmed to fit? I could do this and use a X 38mm holder if the thickness works.

    Sam - why don't you just call JP's and ask them your questions. They'll be more than happy to provide answers ;)

    I will have to do that. I saw the title of the thread and thought someone from the site may have addressed this or have a better solution. I guess not.
