[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
Would you pay $75.00 for this note?

Fr. 236. Speelman/White. Priced below the Green Sheet bid for a VF note due to the four rust spots across the bottom of the note.

Would I pay $75.00 for this note? No, not me personally. The stains/spots are too much an interruption and I have learned to save my funds to buy better quality that will not fail my expectations later because of problems like this. Also, I believe that waiting to buy a finer example imparts greater potential for the note to hold it's numismatic premium/value, and allow for better resale value should you ever need to resell the piece. The only thing that could alter this line of thinking would be if there was no finer known example of the note in question. These are my thoughts.

You're welcome. If you keep after your search, you will find one that you will both like for your collection and that doesn't necessarily strain your budget. It does take a lot of research and patience until the right one comes along, but it's very rewarding when you finally find the one that really speaks to you. Good luck and let us know/see when you find the one you settle on.

Good thoughts Chris. I try to follow that advice as well, but in some areas of interest I pretty much have to buy what's available if I want an example of a particular piece. I'm thinking mainly of counterstamps where many, many of them are unique and most others are very rare. Some never become available, or only once or twice in a lifetime. The choice is to buy, or probably never have one. It's true to a certain extent with my obsoletes also. I bought the Temperance Glassworks private scrip even though it's not in the best of shape. Will I ever see another example for sale, and if I do will it be of a higher quality? Probably not. Walter Breen used to say that condition was irrelevant when dealing with extremely rare and historic coins. Granted though, most of the things we collect don't fit into that category, so your advice is sound and worth considering. Thanks for your thoughts.

Well you had to know someone would have a counter opinion. My budget is limited so I try and find the best quality I can that is within my budget. also, some of the worn bills have charactor, have history. You know they did not spend their whole life in someones collection or album. I collect for the history not any future value they may have but regardless as time goes by they should keep or exceed their purchase price. Just my $.02 worth.

i would probably buy it for 75. theres no major creases and the stains are on the border - not the middle. for a problem piece its still solid and would look good with my Fr. 229 but i typically dont look at paper either.

you should be able to talk them down to 50 or so. otherwise if you are able, negotiate with some junk silver! That's if this note is woth it to YOU.
