This one is raw, just purchased on eBay for right under Greysheet VF-20 bid. Thought it might make XF40, IMO at least a VF-30. What does everyone think? I'm thinking it also MAY have been cleaned some time in the past, but it looks to have a light brown tone still.

I guess VF-35, and looks nice to me! Your gutsy though purchasing raw keys on ebay(though I'll admit to having done similar in the past).

I'll say it has a good shot at an XF40 for these reasons; Very bold wheat lines...Nice, elevated cheek bone...& very pronounced clothing folds. It may get a VF35 on a bad day in a TPG's hand, but I would be surprised if it didn't come back from certification at PCGS or NGC as an XF40. Very nice buy!

I don't want to be a debbie downer but I think it will come back genuine. You should send it in anyhow

I hoping it doesn't come back genuine-cleaned. I only paid $350 for it, figured it was worth a shot. I've had good luck in the past with these, paid $430 for a nice 14-D about a year ago that I thought was borderline XF45 or AU50, came back AU50 :) That was a nice pickup.

As stated above, that was a gutsy move to be purchasing something like that on e bay. But if I had to put a grade on this, it would probably be XF-40. But it could have an old cleaning, but $350 is still low for XF-40.

Grade wise, I would guess 35, but my best guess is that it would come back genuine.

The risk is less that it might have been cleaned and more that it might be a fake. Getting a circulated key slabbed as genuine may be the one time you are actually happy about it. LOL.

The 1914-D is one of the most counterfeited coins of all time. And not because of the Chinese. It has been for decades. Buying raw is very risky.

Still, in this case the risk isn't too high. It appears to be a nice XF40. Has it been cleaned? Well, look for hairlines carefully. You can be certain the TPG will look at the coin very, very carefully.

It looks very suspicious to me. See that silvery thing on the first T in TRUST and the first U in UNUM
