Hey guys. I found these two pennies while searching through some rolls. The dates look different to me and was just wondering if one is possibly the small date.I have trouble discerning the difference. I have done my research, but again, I just want to see what you seasoned guys think. I hope the pics are ok and thanks in advance.
They are both large dates. See http://lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1970Ssmalldate.html and http://www.cointalk.com/t93080/
Thanks rlm's cent. I go to the first site you mentioned for everything that I find. It's just so hard to tell for me. Both dates on the pennies looked different so I was just curious. I think I will quit trying to look so hard at those 70 s cents. Thanks so much for your time and input. It is very beneficial.
Large date. Last year I beat the forun to death posting about the small date with coins fron ny rolls. I finally bought a small date proof in a proof set. Man, that did it ! Seeing one made all the difference. And it is likely to to go up
Thanks for the info 10gary22. It's hard for someone like me who has not been looking at these for real long. The date on the penny on the right has a different look to me. It has a more rounded 9 and it looks to point more toward the 7. Also the 0 is more of a circle with the penny on the right and the penny on the left is more oval. I guess it is just a difference in dies? Don't really know but that is what threw me off. I am glad you looked at it since you went through the same thing before getting a real one. Thanks again.
I can see it now by the tail of the 7. I think that is the key for me. Thanks guys, I think I finally see the difference.
This looks like one a vendor had at a recent coin show. He marked it as a "1970 S, level 7". I looked at it and saw it was a large date. He told me the 7 was high, buit never said it was a "Small date". How I can tell now, is the 7 is very high on the small date. But the 9 has a tight loop and closes off much more at the bottom as it points toward the 7 at very nearly a right angle away from the 1. Looking at both coins together, it's easy to see how different the 9s are. I mean there is a big difference. Now if the loop of the 9 looks open, I can tell right away. Honestly, buying the small date and all 4 of the 1960 cents (UNC) were good investments. I can see it with a crisp clean coin way better than a beat up one or a pic. I don't get the depth from pics that I need. But once you make the connection, it stays with you. IMHO Good luck with it, gary
I think I can see the difference now 10gary22. I have been struggling with it. But I do think in my case it would be better to actually have one on hand like you to compare. Pictures are tough for me too. Thanks for the good advice. Your input is always valuable to me.
