Hey CoinTalkers! I would like to know if if you think this coin, with its interesting color, has some sort of PMD (Probably would be classified as Environmental Damage if so) or if those specks and stripes are toning spots? It is difficult to tell from the picture, I am sure, and it would be much easier to tell if the coin were actually in your hand, but just judging my the photographs included what is your personal opinion? Everybodys opinion matters! Also, while you at it, go ahead and give the coin a grade! I believe the coin to have a full head. Thanks Guys & Gals, Brian
This my guess - from what I can see based on the pictures it looks like this coin was allowed to tone to the point that it was black. Then somebody dipped the coin, but very quickly. I would say they were trying to preserve any underlying luster. However, it looks like the toning had progressed to the point that all or nearly all of the luster was destroyed by the toning. The dip has revealed this. What you see now as dark spots/areas are the remains of that dark, thick toning. As it is, I would say the coin has MS details but that it has environemntal damage.
Yeah, I agree. MS-60 details. I would expect to see more luster on a problem free example, and it seems that the surfaces were messed with to remove the dark toning.
Hmmmm, very interesing. I thought for sure that this was odd, but very natural toning. ...disappointment. If anyone else has anymore opinions on this coin, please feel free to leave a comment below. -Brian
I have no doubt the toning was 100% natural. But it was allowed to progress too far, probably due to improper storage.
Ok, I understand. In the condition, judging by the photographs included, what would the grade on the coin be? I understand it would be shown as "Details" or "Genuine" on a slab, but just a solid grade if it were not damaged? Also, what would you pay for the coin (maximum) as is just by the photo? -Brian
You're asking me to provide a number like 64 or 65, but you can't do that with a coin like this. The reason you can't do that is because the coin has been damaged, there are even signs of light corrosion/pitting. So about all you can say is what I have already said - MS details damaged. As for what would I pay - nothing, I would never buy a coin like this. Even if it was only 25 cents I wouldn't buy it. I am not saying that to knock your coin or anything of the sort. I just wouldn't buy it myself. Buying problem coins is a personal decision that can only be made by each individual, and that is how it should be. But you can check on Heritage and see what others have paid for similar problem coins.
I agree with G's take on the coin (except the $0.25 comment, which is ridiculous given the coin's silver content is multiples of that). It does appear to have MS or AU details.
It is a nice old classic design Brian, and appealing in that regard. I might buy it, but the enviromental damage would make me think twice. Bruce
