Got a few $100's of interest, your thoughts?

I received four $100's with two sets of consecutive serial numbers. Just wondering what you all think of these:



Do they carry any premium?

Spend them. Since they are not old notes, star notes, or low/fancy serial numbers they won't carry any premium.

 

I also got this one which is so close to being a nice serial number (repeater??), but no cigar...



Not in the best shape anyway.

 

In Gem condition they list at $120 each..
I would not spend them if you think they would come back at a 65 or better...

Lots of these printed as they went through the AB-A thru AB-Y Blocks..

Most of the collectors that I know that collect and/or purchase $100 notes look for something of significance.....like a star note, radar, repeater, low serial number,or a really high grade (67 or above). The BEP printed over 2.3 BILLION of the 1996 New York (AB) District $100's, which is over 5 times as many as the next closest District, San Francisco (AL) at over 406 MILLION. If you collect 100's and need this particular block (AB-Y), then keep the best centered one, and spend the rest. I have a 1996 Cleveland Star (AD*) in 58PPQ and would love to upgrade it, but that particular run of 160,000 sells for over $1,000 in CH-CU or better condition.

 

Have to agree with Steve on this one, I'd spend them if you don't need them. No star, not old, not repeater, radar, or binary.

I think what everyone is saying is take those four and invest them on one really nice rare note...
Those would put a nice dent in a 1899 Silver Cert??? Black Eagle or Chief would be nice

However I might keep a pair if I don't already have a No Color Big head... Just be warned, their value is sinking daily as a FRN!!!
I was going to give you a speech on having Morgan Dollars rather than common date FR currency, while at the same time I'm looking for a new Series 2009 $100 Can you say hypocrisy? So I won't say it!

 

While these notes are very common as I mentioned the Block printing is huge...it is when notes are so plentiful that disregard is placed upon them.
I personally collect $100s and would keep them aside for trading or other possibilities. When dups are had like that, at least keep the better one.
JMO for what it's worth...

 

If you can afford to save them, then saving stars in decent condition is always a choice. I like ronterry's idea of using them towards a rarer bill or RickieB's idea of using them towards trading opportunities.

 

I wasn't aware there were star notes. I guess it all comes down to to cash flow. Can the collector afford to sit on $400-$500 worth of 100 dollar bills ? I collect mostly $1's & $2's, so keeping 4 or 5 of these is no biggie.

 

I'm pretty selective with my larger denomination bills. $50's and $100's have to hit certain criteria for me to keep them. My mother just got a $100 star, but it has ink writing on it, multiple folds and is from a run of 1,280,000. I decided to pass and told her she can spend it if she wants.

 

You know guy's... thinking of it, just how much $$$ do we sit on with our collections?
For me the list is growing as I am sure it is with you all as well.

Of the 400 plus notes in the collection, only 3 or 4 of them are below CHCU63, with the majority of them 64s thru-66, 67s and some 68's.
Simply said, depending on what denominations you collect can have a huge impact on what you sit on...for me it's $1 thru $1000s plus stars. Now granted, I have only 1 $500 and 1 $1000 both in 64 PPQ but the lower denoms like $100's thru $1s ..there are many..and it add up really quick.

I am just wondering how I can post images of this collection one day, perhaps I will build a slide show as I did with the large size notes...recall "Money in the Pink"?

Posting just the $5 New York notes will be a massive effort with over 95% of the notes from 1928 thru current....would you really want a post with that many notes in it?

I am certain the image limit is 5 per post here so that would be almost 20 post's with 5 notes each just to present it here.

Your thoughts??

RickieB, a $500 and $1000 in that condition...I think I just passed out there for a second.

I'm not sure exactly how to show that many notes in a forum topic thread. I'm sure it would take a long time. Maybe the administrators could give you an idea?

 

Dr. Kegg... yep..they are in that condition. I sold the 2nd $500 in the FUN Auction it was a 65PPQ..wanted to have a matching set..lol

i would say hold on to them yes right now they are not worth that much .....but as they are the ones with no color and soon a new 100 is coming out it will not take long for them to go higher its a bill the banks hold as not many ask for them or can use them so when the new ones come out the banks will turn in what they have for the new ones .... but that is what i think and what i would do

 

Speaking of the new $100, that should drive the late model small portrait price up a little? Just saying?

 

It all depends. First, the dang things need to come out already!
Second, the print runs of the large-head variety need time to get out of circulation.
Thirdly, people will need to want those varieties instead of the newer notes.

 

yes Dr Kegg your right alot needs to happen before their value will go up and even then it is no sure thing. but the odds to me look good that is why i do have some put away
plus i am sure some of the same thing was said when they went to the small size notes
any time their is change you will have the few that look for it and work with it for their better but most take the wait and see
