Virginia Treasury Note

Discussion in 'Paper Money' started by Log Potato, Apr 11, 2011.

  1. I'm not the least bit savvy when it comes to currency, but a family member has a Virginia Treasury Note that they would like to part with. I have no problem adding this to my collection, but I believe there are quite a few counterfeits roaming around. I asked a couple of questions, like hand written date and serial number. What type of paper it is. The date is July 21, 1862 and the serial is 157100. I didn't know if either of these two could possibly scream counterfeit right away. If there are more diagnostic suggestions that I can look for, it would be greatly appreciated. I am going to look at his note tomorrow so picture will follow.

Log, post some pics and maybe someone here can help you out then. Looking forward to seeing it!

  4. Thanks, Dr Kegg, I actually work in your city.

Here is a picture of the note. I don't have the best photo skills so...
Also, he had a large size 1923 Silver Cert that I took pictures of.

Edit: Can't get photobucket to link

See if you can scan the notes and then put them as attachments to a post. They generally look better that way as well.
Cool! I work there as well, but don't quite live there.

Hey nice Reb note !!! Well the note is not on a known list of counterfeits. Your date is correct issue date 7/21/1862. The treasury note is not a "Blueback" and should be plain on the reverse. I have 2 Virgina notes also. Your exact note is listed in Criswell's under State of Virgina #17. It is the last picture in the book. Congrads. :hail:

  10. It's plain on the back, and the signatures are bled through. It looks a little light, thats the only thing that bothers me.

Dave L: Thanks for the reference photo.

Pretty cool pick up and even better that it's not a reproduction. Did you pick it up from the family member?

  12. Yes, a family member had them.
