Fifty years ago today Man First went into space. The First Cosmonaut was Yuri Gagarin. It seems likely that in the long scale of human history this will be considered a seminal event. As an aside 20 years later, 4/12/81, e.g. 30 years ago today, was the First Space Shuttle flight. In celebration of this event post a coin from 1961 (or 1981), or a numismatic item that has a picture of a celestial body or a spacecraft. Here is a Soviet era pennant. The middle signature is Gagarin's (the top signature is Tereshkova's, the First woman in space). Here's a picture of the First shuttle liftoff. An STS-1 flown Flag and patch (ex: Deke Slayton). ... and finally a couple Franklins from 1961.
Hey, does anyone know why these boards are not accepting photobuck__.com images? The links I posted above are posting just fine at various other websites today, but for some reason the above image links are having phot_buc__t.com changed into *****************. Thank you for your help.
Skyman, you need to read the post displayed under recent threads: "Virus warning ! - read this..." No photobucket photos. Better read it, you will want to know what it says. Lucyray
Didn't germany send a V rocket into outter space in 1942 with a human inside? The rocket went up and germany lost contact It was found documented in some records found by the alllies after ww2 was over... Von Braun was asked about it and commented germany was the first to send a human into space , didnt disclose if the person inside was a german or a jewish test subject on the rocket http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_exploration it tells about the space flight in 1942 but does not go into detail , would not be surprised if von bruan retracted his statement as to not be found guilty or war crimes if the person aboard was jewish and not german
No. Gargarin was the first man in space. Also, 30 years ago today the Space Shuttle Columbia made her maiden voyage...the first flight of a reusable spacecraft.
The Soviet Union was very proud of it's space and rocket achievements. I stayed at the gigantic Kosmos Hotel in Moscow in 1986. The monument pictured above was near the hotel.
San Marino just issued a €5 collector coin on that occasion. The piece depicts the two protagonists of the Space Race, Yuri Gagarin and Alan Shepard. Image from the Numismatic Office. (Larger images are here and here.) Christian
It is part of the 2011 coin set, so it would come with the eight regular euro and cent coins from SM. Don't think it can be purchased without the set. This is the Numismatic Office's info page: http://www.aasfn.sm/2011/eng/num/223.uomo_spazio_e.htm (never mind the "Coming Soon"; the set has been issued). In the US, I would try www.eurocollections.com or www.rsmint.com ... RSMint already lists the set http://rsmint.com/2011sanmarinoeurobucoinset.aspx but does not have it yet, it seems. Christian
