What do you think about plating coins in gold? I don't mean state quarers, but almost any modern coin I can see! Do you think it's smart?
Or, what about hand cutting the coin's background to only see the image? I saw this link and the last one made me laugh. Wouldn't this devalue the coin?

No, it is just damaging the coin, and only "newbies" buy them thinking they are valuable.

Yes, it would devalue the coin, but people usually do it with common coins.

plated and cut coins are made for jewelry and do not have numismatic value.

usually plated/colorized coins are made by a 3rd party that claims that they are collectable, which they are but not in the traditional coin collecting sense.

It is not really fair to just trash such arts right away. But indeed it is true that since they are legal tender and current circulating coins, one could be into trouble for defacing regardless it is for jewellery etc.

But hey, there are plenty of world coins that are quite pretty. Taking the pre-Euro currency for example, those coins are completely demonizied and actually wortheless except for the metal scrap value. Why not make such art from them? :)

This statement is incorrect. the only thing that can get you into trouble is if you deface a coin/bill for the purpose of committing fraud. That isn't the case with coins that are defaced for use in jewelry.

Doesn’t it show stupidity because the people who do so don’t realize what they’re tampering with? Oh, and on my first post, what did you think about the cut quarter with the cigar?

I think they know that they're taking something worth 25 cents, altering it, and selling it for a much larger profit. I'm pretty sure they realize what they're altering...I doubt you'd find them gold-plating a 1909-S VDB and selling it for $1!

Believe it or not young man, disagreeing with you does not make someone stupid. In fact, I don't even think you're stupid for disagreeing with me - just young and excitable. ;)

The folks who make coins into jewelry, and their customers, know exactly what they are doing.
    • They are taking an artifact of some value and altering it in a manner that they believe increases that value.
    • They are taking an object of beauty and altering it in a manner that they believe makes it more beautiful.
    • They are practicing an ancient art and they believe that they are honoring the artisans who preceded them by doing so.
As it happens, you and I both disagree with those folks on all three points, but I am very thankful that not everyone likes the same thing. After all, if we all agreed on everything, there would have been a whole lot of guys chasing my Beautiful Bride, and I might have missed out on the last 50+ years of connubial bliss. :D

BTW IMHO that cigar bit is at least as ridiculous as what passes for popular music among today's teenagers. :mouth:

OOH!:headbang:I hate it when I do that, just get, well "excited." I didn't mean to stay stupid, just a bit unaware of what they are doing, is that better?
