Hello, My name IS indeed Rocky, Im new to this forum but not collecting. I have never seen a coin like this one in my life and have looked and looked online for pictures, info, and value (though sentiment exceeds capital). ** The coin is from 1865 ("the war of the rebellion"). It says "per ardua surgo" (rise through difficulties) and has a large eagle over a crest on the front with 2 ladies (similar to what is currently on the NY state flag). It also has the State of new york written over the date. On the back it says (note there are gaps due to condition)"presented to (space for name) by R Fenton, Govenor of the state of New York In **Gap** concurrent resolution of the legislature as a memento of the courage and fidelity with which he has served the state during the war of the rebellion." Thats all it says. I know it came from my ancestors from Ireland during the mass flood of imagrents which Grant the butcher used to push into the south. Other then that I was hoping someone could help me know exactly what I have and what it may be worth.
Good to have you here Rocky. It sounds like you have a medal of some sort, not a coin. To help ID something like this we really do need a picture so were sure of what you have. Looking forward to seeing it. Bruce
Agreed, pics would be of great help. Good timing on the post. Tuesday 4/12/2011 is the 150th anniversary of the commencement of hostilities between the states, known to some as the US Civil War, with the bombardment of Fort Sumpter.
Welcome to the forum! Sounds like your item there has a good story behind it... quite the good timing with today's anniversary of the war of northern aggression!
