Here's a couple images of two Kennedy 1964 half dollars. on the normal coins the right side leg of the R in liberty is thick and slightly curved. I have found 10 1964 coins in my group that have come from the same die where the R in liberty only has a thin perfectly straight line for the right side of the R in liberty. What do you other folks think we have here?
I'd need a better close-up, but it looks like the die may have been polished removing some of the detail. Chris
Chris I think you are right and if this is the case the worker that polished this die sure did a good job. there are no polishing marks at all on these coins.
It looks like die abrasion to me...That;s the fancy name for polishing the die. Besides the R being thin, there are strands of hair and some hairlines missing. That makes it a pretty safe bet that the details were abraded from the die. Thanks, Bill
Here is an example where I split with the mainstream collector community. Although the die abrasion does not add premium value to your coin it does provide a characteristic that could allow you to attribute it to the specific working die that struck it. Especially if you have more than one example and can identify additional die markers.
Those dies for the 1964 half got alot of work out. They were minted until 1966. http://numismaster.com/ta/numis/Article.jsp?ad=article&ArticleId=9082
I had forgot about this thread of mine until someone brought it back up. Thanks justafarmer for your information. I only disagree with one thing in your post where you say die abrasion does not add premium value to a coin. In the case of these 1964 half dollars it may not because silver is up so high.but on a non silver coin die abrasion can be really valuable on certain coins expessialy the ultra detached leg 2005 bison coins. I have found over 400 of them so far by finding out the right date mint box they are in. I broke open some unopened rolls and ended up with 10 of these unusal R 50 cent silver coins that are from the same die and identical to each other and numerous doubled die coins from these same rolls . I have not checked to see which die numbers they are from. It looks like I have two or maybe three different types. all of these are in coin holders and in mint condition.
