First off, I won't get into the politics of the U.S. Government shutting down due to the budget bill crisis. Do you think, and are you worried, about the price of PM's, the funding of the Mint, and the funding of the BEP if the United States Federal Government shuts down in less than 29 hours? If the government shuts down, H.R. 1 goes into effect, and everything closes, what will that do to the funding of the Mint and BEP for the time being? Will they not mint and print money? Please post your thoughts, and hope that the men and women on Capitol Hill who are part of the GOP, who are Liberals, and who are Tea Partiers come together to reach an agreement to avoid a devastating catastrophe.
I doubt they will shut down. What may happen is they will get another two week continuance , which probably will end in an agreement at that time.
I think somebody needs to turn the tv off. I'm not worried about it a bit. In the worst case scenario, nothing essential is going to be shut down. Nobody's going to lose pay. I expect to see temporary budgets passed for several more weeks. People are worried about this? Quite frankly, I wouldn't care if it actually WAS a full shut down of everything. My mail can wait.
However, if they close the entrance to the National Parks (i.e., Yosemite) next week, it will kill my first vacation in more than a year. Where else will I find the CA state quarter? [required numismatic content <g>]
Shut it down. People will see how little impact it will actually have on them. It's been done twice before and we all lived.
Thats right. if the govt shuts down there will be no printing of money or minting of coin. I predict a 23 day shut down that will result in a spike in unemployment and the economy will slide back into a recession and this will go one for 4-5 more years. Gold will hit $3,000 an ounce and silver will hit $125. A gallon of milk will cost $7.50 and a loaf of bread $6.75 all by years end.
Correct me if I am wrong, but has not most of the money created for bailouts and "quantative easing" electronically created, I mean that they have not actually been printing money, just adding some zeros to the electronic balances?
Maybe you should turn the TV on....pretty much everything you said is inaccurate. To begin with the mail isn't affected by the shut down because it isn't government funded. Cringely brings up a valid point about the national parks...Imagine if you have paid for airline tickets and various other things for your whole family to take a vacation to a national park. If you or your spouse had a government contracting job you could very well lose out on pay. It's very easy to say oh big deal whoopee when it doesn't affect you, but reality is you aren't the only one on the planet.
It seems that some do not understand "non-essential", as when the TVs carried news that most likely the shutdown would occur, there was a pick up in the PM prices in Aust/Asia. Gold currently at 1466.40 and silver 39.92 Jim
I don't know about the BEP but the Mint will not shut down because they are not affected by the budget. They don't get any money or appropriations from the government, they are self funding and send the surplus TO the government. I would not be surprised if the BEP was handled the same way.
The BEP or Mint might not shut down, but how about the collecting side of this? Like the gift shops or websites we get our goodies? Was going to order some stuff from both the mint and bep, but I'm going to hold off till things get straighten out...
Hear, hear. National parks are PUBLIC property. Just because nobody is manning the gatehouse doesn't mean you don't have a right as a citizen to enter the park. I don't know about quarters though, or why you would want one. Try ebay.
note the <g> which I should have put as a The last time my wife visited Yosemite, she brought me back a CA quarter (which, if I add up the cost of that trip) that is the most expensive quarter I own.
They sell the Yosemite quarters in nice little packages in the gift shop there in the valley - you can pick up another expensive coin that way!
I been thur the last shut down while in the army. we got payed but was late. but here a link to keep u up to date. http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2011/04/08/us-government-shutdown.html
