Does the 5 Kronur in this set look cleaned to anybody? Thanks in advance http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160426891658
the seller says the box is old and falling apart... the coins show no toning ... for 80yr old coins.? no toning.. Im not expert but i would suspect they might been lightly cleaned in the past. With out close up pics its hard to give a better opinion
Also the seller is trying to get 500$ for the coins,, but provides no up close pics? If it were I and with nothing to hide. I would show high resolution up close pics of each coin's obv and reverse at as many angles as possible . Perhaps a 12 picture slide show at various angles If i had someting to hide i would do as the seller did two pics low resolution from far away... But that just my opinion. Most reputable dealers on ebay show upclose pics and want the buyer to see what they are getting so they can ask and get top dollar the guy has solid feedback 110%... Alot of His other auction show very upclose pics , wondersome why he didnt show any close ups of these
If they've been cleaned it's not apparent to me Mark, but the pics aren't the best like coppertop says. To pay this kind of money for a set like that (probably a bit high) I'd want to see them in hand, or at least through much better images. I'd try to contact Siggi and Iceman to get their take on it. Good luck with these my friend. Bruce
Thanks Bruce, what looks odd to me is that the 5 krounur is bright. After looking at Siggi's coins as well as others the coin should have darker outlines around the legends, (I think) Thanks For the reply Mark
They are without a dought have been cleaned or what I shoud say (Dipped). Of all the sets I have seen they seem to always have a gun metal type toning on the 10 Kronur and the 5 Kronur all ways seem to have dark toning in the flieds sometimes black and the 2 Kronur is toned a dark brass color with (Sometimes) a blues toned strip were the blue ribbion had layed on the coin for a long time,,,,,,Keep away from this set.
Merlin I would not pay top dollar for the set. However, most pre 1970 coins have been cleaned or polished. As long as it was not damaged or whizzed I see no problem. As the others have said. You need a close up, to make sure. The anti-cleaning mania only started with the advent TPG. I would not be too down on an old grandma polishing her silver. Good luck, as always.
Yes..... Years ago coin dealer did dip silver,,but it was done with stuff you can't even find today and over time no one would have ever know beside the fact silver tarnish,,,,All silver over time. And coins that have been cleaned today with DIP will damage and ruin your coins as well as the value of them,,And as far as polishing coins or whizzing that's a whole different realm all together. Now why would you want to spend hudreds if not thousands of dollars on dipped or polished coins and never see your money when you go to sell them in the future. Please ,,,don't tell anyone that doing such things to coins is all right.
I've come across many coins that were over 80yrs old that didn't have any toning. One Bronze and two Silver coins for $525?, wow those must be very rare!!. I wouldn't buy them but they're not my cup of tea either, your choice. good luck!!
I'd take Iceman's advice Mark, and stay clear of this one. He says they were dipped at one time and he certainly knows the Icelandic material and what they should look like. I know you want these coins badly, but you should wait until the right ones come along. You don't want to suffer buyer's remorse by making an expensive mistake. I've done it, and it's not fun. Look on the bright side though, you might come across one in Burlington this weekend. Good luck! Bruce
Good deal Mark, hold out for one that you'll never regret having bought. Burlington, Baltimore, Philly.....all possibilities. Bruce
Yes fret they are very rare, espeically in the set of three like this. There were 20,000 of the 2 Kronur, 10,000 each of the 5 and 10 Kronur coins made. Of that there were only 1000 sets of the 3 coins made
Thanks Iceman, I thought the same thing but just needed to hear it from the pros. Thanks so much for comfirming my suspicions. I'm gonna find one of these sets one of these days, LOL!
Your very Welcome,,,,,Just take your time,,,The right ones will come along, It took me 3 years to find my set (Keepers) and I had several sets I bought over those years back when you rarely ever seen them on ebay but know this set is all over ebay and coin auctions. I found my 10 Kronur on ebay which was the only one at that time that was graded by PCGS with NGC with two graded at the time and paid way over the krause book value ( By 300 Bucks ) and the 5 and 2 Kronur I got from a dealer in Tennesse,,,Which is the same person I got my 1929 2 Kronur NGC MS-65,,,He sent me the ones he had and I picked out the ones I wanted,,,Great Guy,, and mailed him back the ones I didn't want with my payment. So with all the ones on ebay and the auction houses ,,,,you'll find your set.
Well Merlin as the old show tune from "Little Orphan Annie" goes.... Tomorrow, Tomorrow I love uyou tomorrow your only a day away. If in doubt, don't buy. If you have to ask, you know you are not gonna buy. But I do like hearing all the fuss we make over each purchase. Thanks for sharing.
Sounds like a great guy! I'll get one one of these times for sure, I have a couple dealers working on it too. I told them exactly what I want and what I'm willing to pay for it so there are no mistakes. I have a very clear idea what I'm looking for, so far I have been very good I think. The three set Ive seen in the past few weeks were to expensive and poor examples. I'm sticking to my guns on this one. I just need to be patient.
That is one of the best things about this fourm. You know the answer before you ask the question, but by asking it just drives it home. It's so nice to have people to just bounce things off of.
