The postman just delivered this auction purchase today. This may not be the largest cud known on a nickel but it certainly is the largest one in my collection. I didn’t bother to look this up in the cud books. I saw it in the auction & just had to have it. It should make a great companion piece for my Franklin half cud with similar cud location, appearance, & grade. Thanks for letting me share & please post your coins with cuds.
Of course, a “cud” error occurs when one or more of the dies has a piece that breaks away leaving that portion of the coin unstruck. For it to be called a “cud” the die break is suppose to affect an area out to the edge of the coin (as it does in my new coin). In this nickel, a piece of the obverse die broke & fell away. This coin received a subsequent strike and the obverse design is completely missing in the die break area. The corresponding area of the reverse design is also missing because there was no obverse die to press the planchet into the reverse die. You will note the original planchet surface evident in the un-struck areas on both the obverse & reverse.
cool cud coin The first error coin I ever found in circulation (roll searching) was a Lincoln cent cud.
Hello Hobo, Ben Franklin is also wearing a hat. Here is an old photo of my Franklin cud. It is listed in the cud book as FHDC-54D-1.
This is the type I like best because the cud is not in the area of the date. Great coins here ... Congrats
Hello Magman, These are a couple of the largest cuds in my collection. I like all cud coins & was hoping that more CoinTalkers would post some cool cuds here like Mark14. Post em if you got em.
I'll play This coin exhibits a cud on the reverse through the arrow heads, and also some serious cracks up through the denomination and arrow shafts to the wing. The coolest part about this one is in the middle picture...It exhibits a cud on the rim, taking up 4-5 reeds. I have arrows pointing to the obverse/reverse pictures where it's located on the rim.
I have a 1989 nickel with a cud on the rim. It would be difficult to get a photo (coin is in a 2x2 stored at the bank).
