Doesn't look like VAM 2 to me. The overdate appears lower on the base of the 7: 1887-P VAM-2

Doesn't look like an overdate to me, at all.

I do not believe so either.

It doesn't look like it. The red mark you've used to indicate the position is too far away from the base of the "7" and is in a more vertical alignment. The remnant of the underlying "6" should start at the base of the seven and curve upward in a northeast direction about one-third of the way. There should also be a horizontal scratch in front of Liberty's eye as a PUP.

Nope, the lower loop of the 6 should be obvious.

I'm not trying to be a smartAXE, but there are all kinds of oddities people tend to see on coins that have seen a lot of circulation. It's kind of like when you were a small child watching a horror flick late at night. When you finally went to bed, you heard all kinds of strange noises in the dark. You're looking too hard for something that just isn't there.

1887 over 6b.jpg Ok, I've redirected the arrow, this still a no go? I mean doesn't it look just a little TOO symmetrical to just be random dirt/ect.?

    It's either a camera or a stereomicroscope.

I said it doesn't look like a 7/6 to me because a 7/6 is obvious at around 4" from your eye, if not farther than that. Your coin is definitely not a 7/6. As to what caused that... who knows? It's not something that increases the coin's value, so it's very probably something that decreases it.

Well, not sure about decreasing the value of it, because it pushes OUT instead of digging IN. I'm pretty sure it was done at the mint, just gotta figure out WHAT it is is all.

If it pushes out, it's some kind of die break or a foreign substance on the metal. You can tell by using a 15x glass to look at it.

If you clicked on the picture (or just hovered your mouse over it) you can see that it is more than 15x, however I feel that you simply wish to argue the point and I'm in no mood to debate the issue with you.

I looked at your scans, and all I saw was some black spots and areas where there were compression marks. Nothing that looked like an overstrike or die break. It's difficult to tell the latter on a well circulated coin, such as the one you possess.

I do agree with you that there is nothing visible in the way of PMD that would lower it's value. I just don't see the remnants of an underlying "6" which should also be visible about one-third of the way up on the left side as well.

One thing you should keep in mind about VAM's like the 7/6 is that if the die is repolished for a second or third time to remove evidence of (in this case) an underlying digit, it would revert to the VAM of a normal die even though a PUP (marker) may still be present.

Well, I'm gonna send it off to get it graded anyway with the rest of the coins I've picked out to send and ask them to do variety attribution as well. I know it costs more, but what the hey, they may find something else I overlooked, or I may just be wasting money, but that's nothing new either lol.

Which service are you sending it to? I ask because NGC and PCGS do not attribute all VAM's. NGC will only attribute all 1878 8TF, 7/8TF & 7TF; Top 100; Hot 50; Hit List 40 - Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe PCGS will attribute all of the aforementioned plus "Elite Clashed" Morgans. ANACS is the only service that will attribute ALL VAM's.

Neither NGC nor PCGS will go on a "hunting expedition" for you so you would just be wasting the variety fee. Also, if it happens to be an unknown VAM, they wouldn't be able to attribute it at all. It would have to be confirmed by Leroy Van Allen, first, and Leroy will not look at it unless you give him some specifics about the irregularity you wish to have examined.

Ahh ok, so ANACS, will they do a search and attribute all knowns and unknowns if they believe that something is there and can figure it out?

p.s. Oh yeah, thanks for the info, you guys are great! :)
