i think this coin is fake too.... Any thoughts from the experts? http://cgi.ebay.com/1873-2-50-dolla...386583338QQcategoryZ39469QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
It might just be the coloring of the photo....but I really don't like the looks of the 2 1/2 D----since he says he is an Expert on gold coins it would be kindof funny if this was fake Speedy
The "D" looks like the wrong style and it looks like something happened to it as well, I'm not sure what. The first star on the obverse looks "mushy." And the "Y" in Liberty looks fat and w/o sharp corners.
I am by no means an expert but I believe it is just bad pics. His feedback is 100% and he is guaranteeing it as real.
Your kidding me, right. Do you see how many fools are on ebay and your depending on their feedback to determine if this coin is fake (or if the dealer is ethical) Ruben
Actually I have no reason to kid you. However it is my opinion that simply posting to the forum with a post entitled “Another ebay fake” then directing everyone to a seller auction without positive proof could be consider slander by some. It appears to me that there are some individuals who have issues with selling or sellers on e-bay. I have seen fools and unethical dealers at coin shows and live auctions. The feed back system on e-bay in my opinion is flawed. However going to a coin show and buying from an unknown dealer has some of the same risks. Example from personal experience, a dealer at a coin show recently offered me a complete Merc set including the 1916 D for $645.00 and guaranteed the 1916 D to be real. Would I been to a fool to purchase from this dealer from out of town, unknown to me? It could have been interesting trying to enforce that guarantee if the 1916 D turned out to be a fake. By the way in my opinion it was a fake. Do you believe that I should of step in front of the show announce by name that this dealer was unethical? In my opinion, that what these type of forum threads are doing and to me that unethical.:smile
First off, slander is spoken defamation. Libel is written defamation. And I, by no means, have libeled the seller of this coin. I have pointed out several different questionable aspects about it. On the other side of the coin (no pun intended), selling a coin that is not genuine is a federal offense and against ebay policy. So which of these is the lesser of two evils? Its his opinion versus mine.... However, if you think I am wrong buy the coin and slab it. My guess is you will be unhappy and out about $200+. My point in all of these posts is to learn and to get the experts opinions. Next time I'll end the thread with a question mark.
Welcome to the internet where people give their opinions without the espessed writen permition of Major League Baseball and Sterling doubleday Inc. BTW every negitive opinion isn't libel (not slander duh!). Ruben
Well, I guess I'm guilty if you are refering to me using ridicule. If your refering to the origianl post and subsequent messages about the ebay seller, I strongly disagree that anyone was using ridicule. Its dishonest to not say in plain english that you believe a coin is a fake if you believe it is a fake. For as many Westerner's on this board, speaking plainly should be the norm. Ruben
I think you just experienced the difference between living in Alabama and living in NYC. I've visited both places and your reaction was what I would expect from a southern gentleman (basically, be respectful and courteous, even in regards to a person with questionable ethics) and Rueben's is what i would expect from a New Yorker (brash and to the point, even a little condescending). hmmm, I find social studies to be quite interesting. It proves that more than anything else, we are products of our environments.
I'll try to curb the condensending tone. The anti-NYC/SF/Urban thread caused me to sharpen it a bit. Ruben
I missed the anti-urban thread, but I don't have a problem with your tone. It's a cultural thing, New Yorkers just tend to be more confrontational that those in other parts of the country. just keep being you, Reuben, I enjoy reading your threads.
