Interesting! I ran a quick check on the name, Brian Colb, shown at the bottom, and it took me right back to your link. I know that DLRC bought PCI and changed the name to Dominion Grading Service, but since they ceased operations as DGS, maybe they sold the rights to Colb and/or someone else. PCI had always been one of the top 5 or 6 services, but I doubt that they will ever achieve that ranking again. Chris
ABSOLUTELY DO NOT BUY ANY NEW PCI COINS! I could be wrong but it appears as though PCI disappeared when sold to David lawrence rare coins. David Lawrence then apparently sold PCI (known as old dominion grading) to NY coin mart. The "new" pci coins are complete junk graded to the standards of the worst of the self slabbers. Many examples can be found here http://shop.ebay.com/nycoinmart/m.html?_trksid=p4340.l2562 They have 2 different "new" holders. Don't get burned and buy elsewhere! I already made the mistake of buying 2 of them. One was cleaned and circulated graded "ms62" the other was graded ms63 but was actually an AU55-58.
I think at some point about 10 or so years ago, that PCI was actually a decent TPG grader. I've seen some of their older holders at coin shows and they seem to have caused some wild toning, mostly on Silver Eagles.
After Lawrence sold the shells etc last August the new PCI started out producing slabs that looked like the early ten digit serial number green label slabs that were first made back in the early 90's when PCI had strict grading. For awile they were showing up on eBay being sold as "Old ten digit serial number PCI slabs." with information about how the old slabs were strictly graded. but these were newly slabbed coins with sloppy grading. If you weren't really familiar with the different slab styles you wouldn't recognize that errors that pointed out misrepresentation. Last I knew the new owner had stopped production and was looking for yet another buyer.
would it be okay to sign up on that website for the "5 free coins graded" just to have some coins slabbed, because im worried about my proofs, but the grade doesnt matter to me, would that be okay?
I'll have to give you a +1. I love my air tites, they are sturdy and durable. Also a great way to display your coins, as well as store them easy.
