Have you ever looked at modern silver dollar commemorative population figures, specifically the number of coins minted proof versus BU? One thing that really stands out is that 10x more proofs were minted than BU’s for many of these issues. A great example, and my favorite modern commemorative, is the 2005 Marine Corps Silver Dollar... 49,671 in BU versus 548,810 proofs. And what’s really amazing, at least to me, is that the BU’s are normally priced less than the proofs. What’s up with that? I have wondered the same thing. I quit buying them because I doubt they will command any premium any time soon.
