Future u.s. presidents on a dollar coin

The worse part of this, IMO, is that it end the run of what I think is a very worthy coin in the Golden Dollar.

hmmm, I'm not so sure that the "knaves, thieves, and actors" are a strictly modern situation. True, there used to be some honorable men, but I think that there have always been less than perfect people in politics...

The way I understood it was that they were going to keep minting the sac dollar also, but I may be wrong.

 

It is a painted CT quarter...NOT naturally toned. Found it on the internet under CT quarters. Just for demonstration purposes only.

 

The legislation requires that the Sac dollar continues to be struck at a rate of one Sac dollar for every two President dollars struck. This is going to give them a problem by forcing them to make many more Sac dollars than they will be able to get rid of.

Currently they are making about 5 million a year (from each mint) to satisfy collector demand. If we can assume that the collector demand for the President dollars wil be about the same, then they will have to make 40 mllion President coins each year (5 milion from each mint for four presidents). Per the legislation they will be mandated to strike 20 million Sac dollars, 10 million more than they have been selling. (I am assuming that after the first years overproduction creates a glut of coins in the vaults they will return to just striking coins for sale to the collectors.)

 

But the point is.....

Let's face it - the purpose of this new coin is not educational (much as the Mint leads us to believe). It is a sop to collectors & a nifty way to make money. The current half dollar costs approx 8 cents to make yet we pay a .92 premium. I think the coins will be a BIG collector's items...then again I do not collect any coin less than 100 years old so I may be off my rocker - we'll see.

I went to the bank with a roll of quarters wanting to cash them in for dollar-coins. (We really need a proper name for dollar coins- not just "Ike, Sackies, and SBAs". I expected Sacagawea dollars, but got 8 SBAs and 2 sacies. I'll have fun with these.
Then, I expect to do what I did with the State Quarters: find one, spend every other one I receive, unless it's in better condition. Do you think they will make coin folders for these new Prez-Dollars?

Now, spending one, SHEESH! Some cashiers won't accept Sackes or SBAs, so now a new coin for them to refuse to accept comes along...

 

All presidents rose to heights of greatness but not all presidents turned out to be great.

 

I still think the program will be no where near as popular as teh state quarter series. Quarters are the work horse of the coin economy in the US. Dollar coins are rarely seen. The SQs are a varied collection of different designs. The dollar coins will be portraits of dead guys. A lot of people have favorite states or states that really mean something to them by birth, living, travelling, etc. Much fewer people have favorite presidents.

 

If a victim of our public and private school systems refuses to accept legal US money, I have no problem with demanding to see the manager. If that holds up a line, so much the better to get the point accross.

The thought of the mint pumping out more dead, flat art in the likeness of the 50 states program makes me queasy. Then when you combine with putting it on the same horrible composition coin that makes up the sacagawea what with all its instantaneous tarnishing and then go ahead and keep the current flat dead design I just want to puke directly into my trash can. Its bad enough that Kennedys and Sackies continue to appear in Mint and Proof sets when they aren't actually produced for circulation now we're gonna have all thos crap on hand as well. Blech!

 

If there are too many Sacs being produced, can't the mint melt them down? Or they don't do that anymore?

 

I think the mints stash of 2000 P Sackies has finally dwindled. Everything I've gotten in the past couple weeks from the P.O. and bank have been shinny new 2000 D's.
