Hello woodruffe. Your brother made a good trade there. This quarter is in rough shape, though - I would have called the front Good condition, but when I saw the back, I'd have to say that you have what most people would call an About Good coin. The rims are worns down to the wings - this coin saw a lot of transactions in its day. In general these coins sell for the value of their silver + a little extra for being in barber quarter form. You might get a couple bucks for it, a good swap for a can of pop.
The January issue of the Greysheet says the retail value of a 1904 Barber Quarter in good condition is $6.50.
Here are a few recent auctions that sold coins very similar to yours (same date and basic condition). They all sold for $3-$5 (including shipping). Auction 1 Auction 2 Auction 3 So I agree that it is worth about $4. nice trade! my guess is that someone raided their dad's coin collection.
