Okay members, here is another chance to help. 1854 Three Cent Silver. If anyone owns one, check the date. Especially the relationship to the star. Looks like a normal date, heavy. I can find no trace of 5 between the 8 and 5. From my research, the star should split the 8 and 5. If anyone can confirm or deny this, it would be a great help. Trying to match Breen # 2918
By the way, ND, what are you using to take the pictures? Is it a microscope photo? I don't have an 1854 3 cent silver - sorry!
It is the microscope. Such a wonderful tool for variety searching. Just found a fantastic 1865 Three Cent Nickel with a repunched date. Breen and Cherry Picker listed as rare. Love those finds!!!!! Maybe someone will stumble across an 1854 to help me in this identification. Even with the mountain of referrence material at my disposal, sometimes it is still difficult.
Check out the photo below... http://www.coinfacts.com/three_cents/three_cents_silver/1854_three_cents_silver.htm ... which clearly shows an example where the star splits the 8 and 5. I believe I have at least one or two and will check them later today.
In looking through some past eBay auctions, it appeared that there were three different varieties listed in the past. Two of them have the star splitting the 8 and 5, with one where the date seemed a little further from the star. The third, and it appeared there were two examples, seemed to be the same variety as yours.
The microscope that I use is a 7x45. The photo on coinfacts is the standard issue 1854 with the star splitting the 8 and 5. The proof obverse shows the star near the 5. Some business strikes also exhibit this obverse. Breen lists the coin as rare. Cherry pickers says the same. Still looking for other confirmation.
I was wrong. Thought I had a couple of 1854's in stock, but I do not. I have the 1852, 1853, 1855, and 1856 - just missing the one in the middle! Sorry.
