I just got these back from NGC and had Todd photograph them in Sacramento! These are some of the prettiest and interesting Conder tokens I've acquired so far, some of which are pretty scarce or rare as well. Extremely RARE (only 1-10 known) RARE... SCARCE... SCARCE...
Hey Charmy. That Denton & Smithfield token must cetainly hold a certain significance for you. My fav is that D&H 332A......reminds me of some people I know.........
Wow! I've been really, really wanting to pick up a nice Conder. I love these coins! Where do you come up this stuff Charmy? LOL
Thanks everyone! I usually find them raw at some of the bigger shows, then I send them into NGC to be certified (PCGS does not certify tokens). I am really pleased with this group, they are so interesting and fun to look at!
What amazes me, is how these tokens have been so well preserved for over 200 years! Very nice pieces!
Charmy that's some great Conders , I've got two nothing as nice as these . Gotta love the humor in em . Rusty
The stories behind the designs of many of the Conder tokens are fascinating, funny, and often very political in nature. I found the following stories on a couple of the ones I posted above: The D&H 332A is a satirical portrayal of the head of George III conjoined to that of a patient ass, the British Public. Oddfellows were members of a society organized for social or benevolent purposes. The heads on the obv of D&H 1095A represents William Pitt, the tory Prime Minister - the one facing left displays the horns of a devil's accolyte and the left is the smiling countenance the prime minister presented to the world. The legend refers to Evenfellows balancing Oddfellows with Evenfellows also representing the two faces of Pitt being equally deceptive (the smile and satanic leer).
Wonderful tokes pennylady. I can relate to the Evenfellows toke. At least there are no darn Buzzards in this thread !!!
