Silver Eagle sales halted by Mint? I just heard a report that the U.S. Mint has temporarily halted all sales of Silver Eagles, because of extremely tight supplies in the silver market. Does anyone know if this is true? (Sorry if this has already been posted elsewhere on the site.)
Thats Funny. I just read today that the US Mint was currently doing trial strikes at the San Francisco Mint so they could start producing Silver Eagles due to the current demand. http://www.coinworld.com/articles/san-francisco-mint-to-strike-silver-bullion/ Where did you hear your rumor?
Definitely could be a bogus report. I read this through my email subscription to something called the "Growth Stock Wire". I got this report in my inbox about an hour ago, however i havent seen a second source verifying this so I don't know if it's true or just some internet hooey. I was hoping someone on this site could confirm or deny. I have to say, I like your rumor 100x better than my dreary one. If yours is true, I wonder if those bullion ASEs will have an S mintmark?
I will chalk this up to internet hooey then ... sorry for scaring everyone ... but I figured someone on here would have the scoop. I do know that the mint has broken all records for producing ASE's so far in 2011. The mintage in January 2011 alone (over 7 million) was more than the annual total mintage for about half of all the years of series. If that rate kept up, the mintage of 2011's could easily exceed 70 million (wow). Since the mint freaked out in 2009 and cancelled some product with a much lower mintage of ASEs, I could see how another mint freak out could occur later this year.
