I was looking at a group of pennies that I'm gonna put into an album, and I noticed that some of them are covered in dirt that appears to be easily removed. I'm happy with the wear and tone, I just want to get some of the dirt off. Is there a safe way to do that? Perhaps a dry Q-tip?
hmmm I'd like to know the same. The first thing I would try would be to soak them a bit in distilled water. I may be wrong so please wait for other suggestions from those who have had more experience.
Soak in warm distilled water rinse repeat, if it doesn't get enough off soak in pure acetone then rinse in clean distilled water. If you use a Q tip gently roll the q tip not push
Thanks. I'd also like to point out that these are not expensive pennies. They are in fact quite cheap. I believe that most expensive ones are a 1909 and 1915 D, both in mediocre condition at best. 13 dollars for about 15 pennies.
Its not really the point of the expense. You can find yourself getting into bad habits. If there is some dirt in the devices use a green rose thorn and gently lift it out
Good point. Thanks for the help. If anyone else has other suggestions or removes dirt a different way, please share.
I have a messy, but non damaging to the coins since you say the dirt appears to be easily removed. Use a dental water pick used for cleaning teeth at home. Mine works very well with a small stream that can be used on the coin. But I do it outside as it splashes a lot. Jim
Noting of value? Take them to the sink under running warm water, maybe rub between your fingers a little and pat dry with a paper towel. Works perfectly on general circulated coins and leaves no trace or damage.
