I got this 1955-S Lincoln cent and I just realized that there appears to be a D over the first 5 on the date, as well as the S in its proper position. Is this possible? If so how much is it worth?

Can you get a clearer shot of just the date???

It could be a miss-placed mintmark.

I'll try pictures later. The S is in the right place, but why is the D there, what is it worth?

A better pic would help but it is more likely a gouge in the die that resulted in a raised area in the area of the first 5 in the date.

This is a die chip in the loop of the five that caused it to fill and not a misplaced D. I have found many of these and the good news is you CAN get a small premium for BU examples. Even minor errors are desireable in this date lincoln for some reason.

Well, Littleton rips you off on coins, but is that error worth more than $1.50? If it is, Littleton's "ripping you off" gets payed-back!

  8. Amen to that brother!!! Sad to see I am not the only one to learn this lesson. Better late than never eh?

    Happy hunting,

No, really! Since it was that small error, was it worth $1.50?

You might get $1.50 out of the coin....but don't hold your breath.
The key here is not to buy from Littleton--sometimes they have good deals but you need to search these out.

It was a mistake, I get that. But, all I'm trying to say is
    IN YOUR FACE! LITTLETON!
I wasn't ripped off is all I'm trying to say.

Am I nuts or is the photo a little off. The date also appears to be doubled and so dose the Liberty. I agree though that the thing under the S looks like a D. This is a strange coin. Check it out with Chuck at coppercoins.com. He will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about that coin.

But you were ripped off....how much did you pay for that coin WITH shipping?....I'm not trying to be mean...but trying to help you learn.

No shipping, it was on-approval, thanks to grandpa:D. Was $1.50 ripped off for that error?

Let me put it this way...you didn't really get ripped---but you might have gotten it cheaper.
You see Littleton isn't going to give you a good deal...the good deals I was talking about are the kind when they have ASE at $5....but most of the time...they aren't.

Yeah, there does seem to be some sort of doubling on that coin.

Slightly out of focus but I believe this is the same die in question. As far as buying from Littleton, take their initial offer which is sometimes a pretty good deal and write cancel on your first return invoice. i believe you're better off trolling ebay but you have to have patience.

If that is doubling then that coin could go up in value into the hundreds. The error boom is growing. Again, try Chuck at copercoins.com

    I don't think hundreds....
What we need is a clean photo of LIBERTY and the date.
The cherrypicker's guide has one for a 1955-D...but the value is only alittle when thinking of DD's.
So Kid....get the clear photos and show 'em... ;)

i've seen some coins with a "double -D" error. what does that mean? I usually can't find anything unusual about the D
