I collect a lot of world coins and I get most of them by searching through the value bin at my local coin shop. Today I went in and their usual value bin was almost empty, so I was disappointed and thought I was going to be leaving early. I mentioned it to one of the guys who works there and he brought over a huge tub full of world coins that the shop had recently purchased and no one had gone through yet, so I was the first. Unfortunately I had somewhere to be so I was only able to get halfway through it, but I found so many coins I've never seen before. It was really a dream come true. There were a lot of African coins and various coins from the early part of the 20th century. Probably nothing hugely valuable but I'm not in it for the money. I was just glad to see so many new coins from places I've never seen coins from before.

Yea, I do that at my local coin shop. After I get through looking and buying the U.S. coins, I go over to the foreign coin bin and get about a dozen or so. He sells them 3 for a dollar, so I have lots of fun in that. I found a 1916 and 1918 German coins. Those were pretty cool.

It is exciting. I feel like someone else always gets to all the good coins before me so it's a neat experience being the one to have the first pick.

I might upload a few but it takes so much work to scan all the coins. I bought more than 100 yesterday ...

If you don't mind me asking, how much does your shop charge for world coins?

Rhino, they are 25 cents each. Sometimes there's a discount if you buy enough, but it seems to depend on which clerk you get. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. One time I bought more than 200 and they charged 10 cents each, so I was very appreciative of the discount that time.

Some of the ones I was excited about were coins from Mauritius, most of which have a mintage of less than 1 million, coins from several African nations including Congo, British East Africa and French West Africa and Cameroon, New Zealand and Australian pennies which I just like the look of, several old Brazilian 200, 400 and 1,000 reis coins from 1901 to the late 1920s, two large copper Japanese 1 sen coins with the dragon and a large Chinese copper 10 cash, Mexican 1 centavos including 1900, 1910 and a few years in the 20s and 30s, a Mexican 2 centavo, which I have only seen one other of before, a Straits Settlements 1 cent from 1887 and 1901, some 1950s Mexican 20 centavos, a few 2 Ore Danish coins from the 1920s and several pre-World War II Italian coins. Those are some that I can remember.

This British East Africa 10 cents is interesting because it has King Edward VIII, who I don't think I've ever seen on a coin. He was king for less than a year. The other coin I think is from Africa but I know nothing about it.

The other coin is an Ethiopian 25 cent. According to Krause, they were issued in 1952 and 1953 (though the date on the coin is EE1936).

Very nice lot of coins! I also love collecting foreign coins for much the same reasons - lots and lots of variety, plus they're a heck of a lot cheaper than US coins. ;)

Thanks Craig. I had a feeling that one might be Ethiopia. I agree with your points. I love how many different kinds there are and that they are so affordable. I decided to focus on foreign when silver started getting too high to work on my U.S. sets. It's nice that I can buy more than 100 foreign coins and spend $20-$30. I like money from unusual nations and countries that no longer exist so I always pick those kind out.
