So like i said my name is austen and I was left with my grandfathers coin collection which I had appraised by a local coin shop and I was told my collection of morgan dollars was worth 200 dollars. And when I asked if they should be sent out to be graded he then told me it wasnt worth it.. But when the coin shop owner told me the worth of the coins it seemed like he was offering to buy them. So I then bought a few books on grading and the Red Book. Anyway I was wondering if by a few pictures you could tell me if the coins are worth grading. here are a cople of the better ones, but many are close or the same condition as these and there are many more. thanks a bunch -Austen
It's all about the key dates in the Morgan series. The mint mark, date, and condition have everything to do with the price of the coin and whether or not to slab it. It will cost you about $25 per coin to have them slabbed. If the coin is not a key date and not in a high MS condition, it is not usually worth the money to slab them. For example the 1921...a $20 coin, not worth slabbing, you will never get your money back out of that coin unless it grades MS65 or higher, it won't. The 1888....is it an S mint? It might be worth slabbing if it is. If it is a Philly or NO, then no, problably not. If you have a 1893-S, you will probably want to have it slabbed. We need to know what the mint marks are to know for sure. It mostly comes down to what you want to do with them. I love my coins raw, no plastic, so I am biased. You have to do whatever makes you happy, that is what this hobby is all about. To me the coins are priceless, they were your Grandfather's :smile
the morgan collection consists of a 1878, 1879, 1879-O, 1880, 1881, 1882, 1882-S, 1883, 1884-O, 1886, 1886-O, 1887, 1887-O, 1888, 1888-O, 1889, 1889-O, 1890, 1890-O, 1891-O, 1892-O, 1894-O, 1897-S, 1898-S, 1899-O, 1900, 1900-O, 1901, 1921, 1921-D, 1921-S. I've had these coins for a while, and I don't plan on selling them I'd like to know what they're worth. Most are in the same condition or worse as the ones above.
The 1894-O could be worth slabing if it is in a high grade. If you can post a pic, we should be able to tell. Charlie
Howdy a2austen - Welcome to the Forum !! In my opinion, no the coins are not worth the money to have them graded. Keep them for what they are - a keepsake of your grandfather's.
I agree with not getting them slabbed. You should start a coin collection in honor of your grandfather maybe. It could be something to hand down from generation to generation. Unless your planning on selling them there would be know reason to have them slabbed. Get a Dansco or Whitman Album or just put them in 2 x 2's and start a collection. Great conversation thing with the relatives and you never know when one of them may say "hey I've got some of those, do you want them?"
