I did a search, but didn't find much on this one. About what grade is this and it's approximate value thanks
My first thought is where did you search and not find much on this coin. Its the key to the Indian Head Cent Series and there is stuff plastered all over the internet about it. I just went to google and typed in 1877 Indian Head Cent and got 1,730,000 results.. Here is some leg work for you.. http://coinfacts.com/small_cents/indian_head_cents/1877_indian_head_cent__copper.htm
Thanks Jim, I meant to say I searched here in the forum. Yes I know what I have but I am a newb and not sure what grade this coin is and it's estimated value
Better (bigger) pics would be needed to grade and authenticate. It's a heavily counterfeited coin, and I'm almost immediately suspicious of yours if for no other fact than it looks like it's in very good condition and would be a very valuable coin if real.
I am leaning towards the not genuine camp... I don't see the central weakness on the reverse... Bigger pictures are a must.
The picture of the obverse is very small. To grade it and put a value on it we will need larger and closer pictures. If it is authentic, you are looking at anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000 depending on the grade. Just judging by the pictures you do have it could possibly be EF-40 or better. Sweet Injun!
Any 1877 indian head cent that is not slabbed has a very high probability of being a fake. Especially in higher grades.
Agreed, without even seeing the obverse it's pretty clear that isn't an 1877. It doesn't have the weakness on the N in ONE and all 1877s were struck with the same reverse die. This is most likely an altered date coin.
Add me to the list of possible fake. The 'N' in ONE on the reverse is too bold to be a genuine Business Strike 1877 IHC. Please post better, larger photos.
I would recommend sending it in for certification... the mouth for some reason looks strange to me. The tops of the 7's look too fat to me as well.... could be the picture.... Just something about the fact that there is no central weakness on the reverse with the strange looking lips and 7's... I still think it's bad... Find a local dealer to send it in for you to NGC or PCGS... that's my best advice.
Welcome to the forum. Here is a PCGS article on this coin. The images are still a little small for me to say for sure. Jim http://www.pcgs.com/articles/article_view.chtml?artid=5552&universeid=313&type=1
Save the $50, I'm pretty confident it wouldn't be slabbed. Dutchy, I wouldn't buy it with your money. Worth noting I'm far from an expert, though, I just got a bad feeling about the coin.
haha! I was just giving them the option to be %100 sure. Lots of people don't trust the opinions of people they have never met on the internet.
In that case, take it to some local coin dealers, or better yet, wait til there is a major coin show in your area and see if you can find a single dealer that would be willing to buy it. I'll bet not.
The front looks legit. The final feather points between the "I" and "C" which is an identifier of a true 1877, and both 7's seem unaltered. The reverse is what throws me. The "N" in "ONE" seems to be very strong and bold. As stated, the N on a business strike 1877 is weak, especially around 4 o'clock. The only reason it would be bold and still be a real 1877 would be if it were a proof, which it doesn't look like. I would take it to a reputable coin shop and see what they say. If it's a fake I would say it's a pretty good one.
Sorry but im leaning toward counterfit too, If it looks funny and its the key date for the indian head series, it proabably is.
