A series of 5 yuan silver pieces is being auctioned. I (and the seller) can identify all of them except this one, which looks like one of the series (founders of Chinese culture), but doesn't appear in Krause. Any experts on coins of the People's Republic out there, who can tell me who is depicted on the coin?
I do not know anything about these types of coins but I can help with the translation. The person depicted is Su Shi (also known as Su Dongpo) who was one of the most famous Chinese poets of the Song Dynasty. He lived 1037-1101. The first line from one of his poems ("Battle of the Red Cliff" or "Red Cliff Rhapsody") is quoted at the upper left above the denomination "5 yuan". Gary
