My father has multiple sets of most years all the way back to mid sixties. I have runs from 1955-1964, 1982-1992 and 2010 and 11 and a few odds and ends. Thats mint sets. Dad has the same in proof sets, all the silver proof sets...you get the idea. Not a one of those sets is the pile of crap a lot of people say they get all the time. Granted, I am sure many folks here deal with a lot more of these than I do, but to go on what I read here, I might as well go press a quarter in a cow patty rather than buy a mint set. As for value, just depends. The 1955 set goes for 150 or so due to low mintage (probably a good deal more now with silver prices). There are a number of sets like that, perhaps not to that extent, but definately good values. As said, as long as you dont expect to get rich, keep on getting them. The 1973....first year that the Ike dollar was in the proof or mint sets. They did not appear in the 71 or 72 sets. So perhaps they werent bidiots or having lack of knowledge. You all need to stop with this bashing someone for paying what they do for something. I am sure you wouldnt pay the amount I would for a comic book. Or what I would pay for a fossil. Or what I would pay for GSA Morgan CC. I pay what *I* feel the item is worth. The same goes for others. And that does not make me or them idiots or ignorant.
Let's throw in a somewhat different aspect, e.g. how about CURRENTLY buying mint sets from 1947-58. Some of them can be worth bongo bucks because of how the coins have toned. I will grant you, most of the sets that have toned up nicely have either been picked through and the top coins in the set sold off, or the sets are going for stupid money.
green, no question they were going too hi for it. My thing is if thats what they want to pay for it, so be it. I had some folks from Florida trade me small (3 inches and under) Megaladon teeth for a species of extinct Tiger shark teeth that I walk on half the time when collecting. It just happens that those tiger shark teeth dont show up much down there, so they were more valuable to those folks. They could have literally paid a dollar a dozen for them online. I didnt think them to be unknowledgable or anything like that. Its simply what they felt those teeth were worth.
As I always say value is in the eye of the beholder. However I would think that someone would do a "little" research before coming off that kind of change. I know I do but sometimes I pay more than what is considered average price because I want it really bad or I need it to fill a hole in my collection.
