School me... I don't know much about this series, but there are parts of the hair and eagle's wings that appear to be worn more than just a touch? Are they just spots where the strike is characteristically soft in this series? I honestly don't know how much detail to expect, but if it is as much as I imagine, this is an AU coin without a doubt. Very nice. Great eye appeal. I might forego the TPG as well if it were mine. Personally, I say AU55, but like I said, I am novice to this series/era.
I'd buy that coin at AU-58 money all day long , even if it gets a 58 it'll most likely sell for 62 money . Rusty
I think this coin is a good example to illustrate to difference between what weakly struck areas and areas with slight wear look like. As I have tried to explain before, both areas will have a different color than the lusterous areas near to them. This makes it easy to spot both. However, there is also a color difference, as well as a difference in the texture of the metal itself, between a weakly struck area and an area with light wear. In the pics below, the areas circled in turquois are weakly struck. The areas circled in red have light wear.
Not really. Once you see it enough times you recognize the differences at a glance. It's called experience.
I'm not very familiar with this series but by first glance i was also thinking AU. Could the stars on the obverse also be considered weakly struck. The only one that seems to look good is the one right above LIBERTY, the rest seem to be flat.
We're not worthy! Just had to say it GD. Good stuff! :thumb: As far as the grade goes, I will say AU58, very nice but it's not gem. It's really difficult to guess what kind of push the TPG's will give tho'. Very nice!!
Yes the stars are weak. But I was not trying to illustrate just any weakly struck areas. Rather what I was trying to point out was the differences in the color of the metal. You see, certain parts of the coin, like the circled hair curls, the eagle's head, wing tips and talons, appear to be flat. That flatness in those areas can be caused by two things - wear or a weak strike. And the only way you can tell which caused it is by the color of the metal. And the difference in the color is only going to be a slightly different shade of gray. The color that wear produces is the slightly darker shade. That darker shade is most easily seen in the areas I have marked. Compare the color of the curls to the high point on the cap that I have circled for example.
Shoot sorry guys. This coin went 58... I'll see if I can find a pic in the holder. It's long gone tho. I was slightly surprised. It was one of those AU63 type coins.
Dang Dutch , that's one of the best 58s I've seen . I'd pay AU-58 prices for that all day long . Nice coin .
