I have a world coin catalog from 1901-2000, but not for the previous century so I have little to go on as I look to add to my British penny collection. I have all dates from 1889 to 1967 (I'm not as interested in the new style) with the exception of a few varieties. I have some others scattered between 1853 and 1886. One thing I'm wondering is if there are any years in the Victorian era that no pennies were made? I don't want to waste time looking if none exist. The second part is harder - is there anywhere I can get an idea of what some of these should be worth without buying a $70 catalog? Often when I search on eBay I only find two or three matches for a date with high buy it now prices, but it's hard to tell if that means the coin is rare and valuable or if that seller is just trying to get rich. I'd like to know which dates I should just settle for a worn copy on and which I should try to do better.

The best I could tell, the following years, no bronze pennys were minted during Victoria's reign. However, during each of these years a silver penny was minted. 1838 1840 1842 1850 1852 As for the second half of the question, the difficulty lies in that between 1841 to 1882 or so some years had as many as 10 variations in design (1861) and there is a lot of overdates! You really need the book!. Try getting a copy from a library.
Ignore the dates for Silver Pennies as those were Maundy pennies from sets and not the circulating copper or bronze type.
The 1869 and 1871 are very rare, esp the former (so coins in 'good' are acceptable here!). Here is the link I use for values (in £) is the same one davedempsey uses (referenced above): http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/values/penny.html Certain years had pennies minted at the Heaton mint - the 'H' mintmark being under the middle of the date. All pennies of 1876 were produced there, and just about all 1882; 1882 pennies without the mintmark are excessively rare. Check out that link - it provides a very good indication as to what's out there. Also, there was a fabulous auction of high-grade pennies sold by UK dealer Colin Cooke last year. This had many, many of the varieties for 1860 & 1861 that are referred to in an earlier post. It's in 2 parts: Part 1 http://www.colincooke.com/coinpages/james_workman_pt1.html Part 2 http://www.colincooke.com/coinpages/james_workman_pt2.html Enjoy!
I have a collection of 203 British Pennies dating back to mid 1800's looking for advise as to there value ? Rick
Rick Check out the values page I and another poster listed here: http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/values/penny.html Note that the prices are in £, so multiply by about 1.60 to get $ prices. These are updated fairly regularly, and the guy who runs the website is very knowledgeable about UK coins. Hope that helps, and enjoy your penny collection (I do!).
Rick, Use the guide in post#5, but remember it is only a guide. If your pennies are worn and not key date they are worth more as scrap. About 3 times a year I take 50 -70 kilos of pennies and halfpennies to the smelters. I buy them at flea markets every weekend sort what I want to keep and melt the scrap.
I'll look at it, I bought some furniture & things at an Estate sale this was among them, I'm not really a coin collector so whats my options ? I'm in Louisville ky
