I was searching two boxes of kennedy halves and came accross 20 halves with no reeded edge. 1-1972 3-1974 2-1983 1-1985 1-1988 1-1990 3-1993 1-1994 3-1995 2-1996 1-1997 1-2000 Is this a common error or has someone filed the edge's down?
Yeah i thin they've been sanded down for some reason, but since they aren't silver im clueless as to why. Were the half dollars in a roll, or loose? You said 20 so im guessing a roll. You may never find out.
i see alot of halves with no reeded edges too i heard this was caused by slot machines years ago the slots are gone but the halves are still with us
Box after Box I see them all the time. The dates dont seem to matter. but the smooth edge I see in about 1 out of 50. I figured if they werent silver or dates I needed they were getting thrwn in the dump pile.
Yeah but i think he's saying he got an entire roll like that. Yeah i see them randomly all the time as well, i just thought he was questioning the entire content of a roll as "sanded" down?
The edge of the Kennedy Half Dollar is mostly composed of copper which is much softer the the copper-nickel cladding. As such, it's usually the first thing to go on a copper nickle Kennedy Half. Having no reeding is not uncommon at all on any copper nickel clad coin.
If you ever saw the mechanism inside a slot machine, you would realize that the odds of a coin having the entire reeded edge flattened would be about as likely as someone hitting two progressive jackpots on the same machine on successive spins. Chris
I think you may be mistaken Chris since as I pointed out, the edge is primarily copper which due to its relative softness is the first to go. All a coin really needs is the constant rolling or tumbling action to wear that edge away. Whether its from a slot machine or simply a coin counter, it doesn't really matter since nothing unusual is occuring with coins like this. I forgot to add, this is not an error. Just an indication of wear.
Thank's for all the help guy's. The 20 coin's came out of multiple roll's. Looking at the edge all you see is copper. I also beleive it was caused by a machine now that you bring it up. It's to smooth and rounded too be anything else. I hooked up my Cannon Scanner/Printer to day and love it. The detail on a coin is great can really blow it up a $70 investment well spent. Will be spending alot of time looking for error's. I have about $50 face of 55's to look through. I will keep you posted if I find anything. Happy coin searching!
