1928-P always looks too good.

I'm just asking your opinions. This ebay dealer hsturn has coins that always look too amazing. Is this because he sells great coins, is a wonderful photographer... or worse. I see what I believe to be a scratch, on the obverse, but even it doesn't detract too much. My intuition tells me to go with a PCGS, NGC or ANACS graded coin, but they always look so dull.

Just asking because i've been eyeing his 1928-P Peace Dollars in general for over a year.

My intuition would be to stay away from the coin due to the scratch. I don't think there is any way that happened in a mint bag.

I would stay away from that one as Zane stated....also if I were you I would keep hunting a slabbed one...they can take a 1928-S and remove the mintmark.

I see at least 2 scratches and likely 3 - I would pass. Your comment about the graded coins - you say they look dull. Have you seen any of the coins in person or just the pics ?

The Scratch is very noticeable. I would look elsewhere for the coin.

I'm mostly comparing photographs, i'm assuming the general dullness of slabbed coins is due to a combination of a bad photograph and the slab itself. The reason I point out hsturn is generally looking at all his inventory every coin is just radiating luster. I think he's just a good photographer.

Hope this isnt off the thread..but the price looks good according to 'coin values'..but how many people have ever purchased a coin from ebay and gotten what they paid for?? I am not ready to do that yet..although I have bought loads of stamps and baseball cards and never been burned. :) Please forgive my lack of knowledge on coins for a few more years until I get more educated!!! lol

You're right, he is. But he also sells some very nice coins.

While luster may not be readily visible in a coin pic, it should be remebered that luster cannot be faked in a coin pic either. At least I've never seen anyone that could do it. So if strong luster is visible in the pic, odds are it will be even greater in person.

Also remember that the better grading companies are sticklers for a coin having the right amount of luster for the coin to be assigned a given grade. So if a coin is slabbed MS65 the luster is there whether the pic shows it or not.

Let me answer that by saying that I have never purchased a coin on ebay and NOT gotten what I paid for. That is not to say that I haven't paid more than a coin was worth, I have. But I knew full well that I was doing it and did it anyway just because I wanted that particular coin.

But that is the key, you have to know what you are buying based on your own knowledge - not the description provided in the auction.

One other thing, the prices listed in Coin Values are highly inaccurate. But even if they were accurate, they would not apply to this coin. Those prices would only apply to problem free coins. This coin is not problem free - it is damaged and as such its value would only be about 50% of that of a similar undamaged coin.

Up close,my 1928P looks like it accidently ended up in a cement mixer so I decided to see if I could get a decent picture of it by manipulating the lighting do hide the worst of the dings and scratches. This is the best I could do but it's not too bad.Imagine what a pro could do.
