Thanks for posting the Mexican coins

I think that I got 4 blank planchets from Mexico which were intended to be the 500 Peso from the mid 1980s. The blanks meet the composition & weight spec for your 500 peso coin but the blanks are not polished as I would expect for proof manufacture. I think I still have two of those uncirculated blanks.

Hey Ripley, since you seem to know about these, can you tell me what this is? I think it looks like a 5. Is there a 5 reales coin? The year is 1879.

Hi Hidden, without it in hand its hard to tell. If its a wee bit smaller than a Morgan silver dollar its a 8 realies, minted in Guanajuato (Go).:D IMG_0323.jpg IMG_0322.jpg IMG_0321.jpg IMG_0324.jpg IMG_0325.jpg
The top 2 of mine were also minted in Guanajuato, the bottom one at the Alamos mint. ;)

Ripley, do you know what all the letters and numbers mean? Maybe if I knew what they signified it would help. The number before the letter R on mine is either a 5, 6 or 8.

OK I will give it a shot. IMG_0326.jpg
    Reading left to right.
    8R means 8 Realies
Z - indicates the mint, in this case Zacatetas
    Next the year - 1888
Next - TZ the initals of the engraver at the mint.
    Hope this helps. :smile

Here is a DO mint mark from the Durango, with the assayer’s initials JP Dated 1881
Usually described as “8 Reale 1881 DoJP”
