I used to get all kinds of slack from the wife. I simply explained to her that at least this was a hobby that MAKES money as opposed to losing it.....ie gambling, golf, drinking, etc......IF I tell her at all......

I also explained that this collection was part of her RETIREMENT also. If I find a silver half for face value, I say "See babe, here is another $13.50 towards our retirement!"

If I buy a cent piece for $25 and I show her they are selling for $35 or book for $45......she's cool.

If I would buy $500 in halves or $1,000 in Ike's at face value.........the LEAST I can do is get FACE at the bank...........and if I get an error, silver, BU.....whatever...."Look babe another round of golf for US when we retire" get it??

I do buy within our means but she decided that the number I threw out of $40 a month won't budge. She says I said that was my monthly budget and that's that. Just gets hard for me to see that when we spend a LOT more than that on house stuff, eatting out, ect. Oh well I'll deal with it. I normally do not go over by much, $5-10 but ANY amount over and she has a coniption.

Doesn't sound fair to me. You need to enjoy life while you can. As long as the bills are being paid. If she is going to impose a strict budget on you it sounds like it's time for you to do the same. Set a budget for EVERYTHING and don't let her go over.

Or why not start taking $5-10 out of your wallet (or hers!) every week and put it away for coin purchases?

This is the key here that you mentioned: "My view is I work hard and 99.99% of my money goes to everyone else so I should be able to spend some on myself."

I pay 3/4 of the bills in my house, so my wife doesn't give me any grief on my coin purchases. That being said, I know my limit and I stay within it, even if it causes me to miss "good deals."

That about sums it up. My wife just cant understand spending money to buy less money. We both have a joint living exspense account and seperate individual checking accounts that has a set amount deposited into them weekly from the paychecks. We each use those accounts to buy whatever or little hearts desire. If one of us has a need to overspend we have a sitdown to discuss it with one another. And if its decided to overspend then the other spouse gets the same amount as the overspend to add to their account. That kinda curves the overspending. lol
You may wear the pants in the house but she irons them and knows where you sleep.

Basically the same way things work in my house. We both have our own accounts and joint accounts for the bills/saving/retirement.
I consider silver and gold bullion part of our retirement/investment so if I plan on buying it for more than face value I will usually discuss it with her first. We used to each take a certain amount of cash a week for things like lunch/ her nails and I would just squirrel it aside, bring my lunch to work, and save up until I have enough to buy what I want.

LOL I like that. Maybe I need to try that more often. I did that on some recent proof quarters i got for a song and she didn't pitch a fit, except give me a hard time but that's what spouses are for right? lol Anyway, I know I need to slow down lest she kill me in my sleep. I think I have spent about $2000+ in the last year.

I guess you have no sense of humor. You must live a very, very sad and lonely life.

My girlfriend cracks up every time I ask her what she's doing out of the kitchen. It's a joke, dude. Relax.

So you have a $40 budget per month and you spent $2k last year? So... $40*12=$480... $2000-$480=$1520... that's way, way over budget.

She might have a good case then.

$2000 in a year I don't see a problem with that. My husband spends more then that most of the time, she's lucky.

My girlfriend has no problem with me collecting coins...I have my money, and she makes about 60 bucks an hour writing code.

Best girlfriend I ever had......I hope her husband never finds out about me.....seriously.

Sorry if you thought I was upset by this I could not find the little guy rolling on the floor. I just figure the responses will get ugly in a bit. This place has more drama than Jersey Shore sometimes.:D

Others can bicker as much as they want. If you truly want to enjoy your life, you have to learn to laugh at yourself. I won't joke about it any further unless someone sets me up so beautifully again that I cannot resist it. Back on topic, I just told my girlfriend I spent $200 on wheat cents and she just shook her head at me.

You're definitely not alone at all. ;) What I do is try to keep my collection as quiet as I can that way I don't have to catch any flak when we need some money. Also, I sell alot of coins so I can feed my addiction, that's the way that ball bounces. You gotta be creative when you're married or you will hear more crap than a toilet seat!! :D good luck
