Consumers discard 180 million cell phones every year, and they contain $130 million in gold.

So, on average, each cell phone contains $0.72 worth of gold. It would cost you more to drive somewhere (and back) to have the gold recovered from your old cell phone.

The problem lies in extracting the " Gold " as is with old apple mac computers .

I did know about that and actually there was a docu on one of the History channels about gold and the many uses of it, and one of the uses of very small amounts of gold was in cell phones. However, the downside was it would not be worth anyone's while to collect old cell phones because the purity of the gold is low and not worth the trouble you would have to go through to collect the phones.

There's probably more copper in them than gold. So, if there's 72 cents in gold and say 1.05 in copper, you'd be even richer!

If I'm doing the math right, cell phones have a higher gold percentage than the ore at a typical gold mine.
