Hi I am new to coin collecting. I have going thru tuns of coins my grandpa gave me and I found another odd mint mark on a 1958 D nickle. Chances are it is nothing but like always I like to make shore. What do y’all think?
That's right. The mintmark was not doubled (meaning it was not doubled during the striking of the coin); it was repunched (punched two or more times into the die). We call these RPMs (RePunched Mintmarks).
thank you for the fast reply. what does the rmp-004 mean? And how rare is it? I can't find any thing on this in my red book.
RPM-004 means RePunched Mintmark number 4 for that date and mintmark coin as designated by someone. I don't see this particular RPM listed in the Cherrypicker's Guide.
