Hey CoinTalkers! I was searching through a box of $25 Pennies and I came across this while putting aside all of the Pre 1982 copper cents, http://www.youtube.com/user/iGradeMS70?feature=mhum (This is a link to my somewhat popular YouTube channel and the first video you see on my page should have a giant picture of said coin and is titled "COIN ROLL HUNTING: Lincoln Cents (Part 2) MULTIPLE Wheat Cents Found!!!") You do not have to watch the entire video but just check out the picture of the 198X-D Memorial Cent and tell me what your opinions on it are. I am unsure of what it may be. I was thinking possibly and obstruction in the planchet or a lamination over a "4" or something of that nature. I know FOR SURE it is not a dig because whatever the lamination may be in is slightly elevated of of the coin. PLEASE LEAVE COMMENTS ON THIS THREAD WITH YOUR OPINION! IT REALLY DOES MATTER! Thanks Guys & Gals! Have a pleasant afternoon. -Brian
Honestly, I don't believe that is true. It does not look like ANYTHING of that nature what-so-ever! It is not that I doubt your skills in judgment of errors it is just that if you were to see it in person your opinion may be far different...
That's not a lamination error. Laminations look kind of like the coin is peeling, or has peeled, yours looks like the number was partially hit until it was smooth. I would agree with ikandiggit on this one. Rolling machines can do all sorts of damage to coins. If not rolling machine, then some other type of damage.
This thread has pics of laminations: http://www.cointalk.com/t140427/ here's one that shows coin rolling damage: http://www.cointalk.com/t87298/
Having seen over 100 of this type coin over the years I can tell you with certainty that what you have is a 1981 Cent with the 1 pushed sideways by the fingers of a roll crimping device. This is post mint damage. Richard
