what is the differance im starting to collect coins i have been collecting since 1996 i was in 6th grade but i was collecting random ones i never really cared about what i got or knew if it was worth allot or nothing....so i am now starting to collect silver coins what is the diiference of 5gn and 1 oz or 1gn and 1 oz and i was also wondering is 1 troy oz and 1 oz the same thing thanks:hail:
"gn" can stand for "grain". There are 480 grains in a troy ounce. There are 437.5 grains in an avoirdupois ounce (the "regular" ounce we use in most of everyday life, having 16 ounces per pound). A troy ounce and a regular ounce are not quite the same thing. With precious metals like silver and gold, the troy ounce is used for weight. The use of "1 oz" depends on the situation. If you are referring to the weight of a letter, then you are talking about the regular ounce. But if you are talking about coins or precious metals, then the "1 oz" will be referring to one troy ounce.
A difference being exploited on ebay involves the use of "Troy pound" such as advertising an item weighing 1 troy pound. A troy pound is 12 troy ounces, not 16 as in avoirdupois. This page has a converter and a cross reference at the bottom. http://www.saveonscales.com/weight_converter.html There are also old measurements such as pennyweights ( often used for jewelry industry).
