Hello all, I am new to the board and I am also new to pre 1933 gold. I have been collecting bullion for some time. Below is my first purchase and I am having some trouble grading it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The coin has decent luster and to me looks to be at least AU. Thanks a head of time, Matt
Welcome to the forum and to gold coins! My guess on your quarter eagle is an AU55, see what other's say. You can see the wear on the head-dress of the Indian, on the reverse it's a little more difficult but the wearing is on the eagle's wing or shoulder. The reverse looks a bit better than the obverse but that could just be the angle of the pics. :thumb: jmho
Thanks for the quick replies. I was guessing it was at least AU55. On another note, would anyone recommend I get a coin like this slabbed, or would you wait to find a better specimen. I guess the real question is, in pre - 1933 gold, do you only slab your MS stuff, or do you go down to AU.
It is definitely circulated. I don't think it is anywhere close to AU. It appears to be closer to VF or low EF to me. The Indian Quarter and Half Eables are some of the toughest coins to grade, especially from photos.
