About two weeks ago I posted pics of the first obsoletes I bought. One note was issued by the Salem & Philadelphia Manufacturing Co. with a denomination of $3.00. While researching the company I found that they also issued $1.00 and $2.00 notes as well. I found a nice example of the $1.00 note for sale last week and just received it today, so decided to post a pic. I also came across an example of the $2.00 note on line, and decided to buy that one too. I should get that one later this week and will post it when I do. I don't think this company issued any other denominations, but want to check further to be sure. I think I got the whole set, and am very happy about it. :smile Bruce
Nice companion note Bruce. Both were printed by Rawdon,Wright & Co in 1828/1829, which eventually evolved into the American Bank Note Co in 1858. Are they both approx. the same size, physically ?
Yes, they are the same size Steve. I would imagine the $2.00 note is the same, but I'll find out for sure when I get it. I started doing some research on this company, but haven't found much about them. I do believe they were only in business 1828-1830 though. Bruce
$1, $2, $3... you're lining them right up. Great work and congrats on the pick ups. Can't wait to see them together.
Thanks Chris, I was excited to find the other two notes available. I didn't find anything out about the company...yet, but did learn that they also issued a $5.00 note, so the hunt continues. Bruce
Great looking Obsoletes... In my opinion it is hard not to like thoese type of banknotes. Thanks for sharing these and looking forward to seeing it completed.
Thanks for your comments RickieB. I will post the third note when I get it later this week. I agree with you concerning the obsoletes. They are hard not to like, especially from a historical perspective. I hope to get a bit of history on this company as well, as the research is fun to do. Bruce
I just received the $2 note to add to the other two, and thought I'd post a pic. This one is really nice. And now on with the hunt to find the $5 note. I think the $5 is a bit scarcer than the others, so it may take some time. Bruce
Wow, great looking set you have there BRandM. I was doing that with a Michigan obsolete once, but then lost steam and focus. Glad to hear that you're going through with trying to acquire them all.
Yeah, I'll keep looking for a $5 until I find one Dr Kegg. I did get a copy of Haxby's book on NJ obsoletes, and at the time it was written there were only the 4 denominations known to him. There could be more now, but hopefully the $5 note is the last one. Thanks for your comments Chris and Darryl. I'll be sure to post again when I find one. Bruce
